Do I need dedicated hosting?

I currently host with hostgator, and haven't had any problems.
I keep all my large files with Amazon AWS, and my site isn't very high volume, but speed is important to me.

What type of speed increase could I expect for loading using a dedicated server versus shared hosting? I'm not sure if it's worth the cost but if it was a dramatic difference it may be.

Rich, there would be no speed difference if you upgraded to dedicated.

Dedicated would just give you a private ssl cert and anonymous FTP.

You could also work on your website if hosting was down.

Other than that there would be no reason because you say your volume is low at the moment.

There would be a speed difference if someone on the same server as yours was using up a lot of continuos processing power. A dedicated server will give lots of freedom. You can do whatever you want with it. If you plan to go dedicated for a long time, you are better off buying your own server and use a colocation service. That's what I've done for the past 5 years and it's been smooth sailing for me. Only way I could see you using a dedicated serveris by having large and constant cpu % useage. Other than that, you should be fine on shared hosting.
