What do you prefer for short training sessions - Video Or PDF

Hi,

So a survey to my list yielded a 48% video and 52% PDF result which is a bit close. I know a hybrid or both options can work BUT If you have to choose between a 20 minute video or a 40 or so page PDF, what would you prefer?

Thanks

Freddie

Would prefer the video, as long as I can put it on my iPhone.

Why not take the slides (if you're making a slideshow video) and convert them into a PDF. That way you can offer both.

You can even take it one step further and rip the audio from the video, and transcribe it. That way you end up with both audio, video and PDF.

For transcriptions you can use fiverr.com to have it done for next to nothing

I agree with Robert's answer. But if I needed to choose, I would go for videos.

    Hi Robert,

Interesting about the iPhone. One of the survey questions was what device they normally use to view videos on and between

    iPhone
    iPad
    Computer
    Other Smart Phones, devinces

85% responded that they normally view videos from their computer (more than 200 responses). I will take that into consideration and make the videos mobile enabled.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

      You're welcome, Freddie

Yeah, I know from survey results I've seen in the past that computer seems to still be preferred. But 85%?! Thought it would be less.

But as we can see just from the replies in this thread people have all kinds of different preferences.

As I mentioned in my post above, going with as many modalities as possible when presenting your content is the best - if you can manage to do that.

And again - it's not even as hard as you might think: 1) make a slideshow video 2) rip the audio from it 3) transcribe the audio into text

Voilá! Three products from one video recording

I would prefer the PDF but that is because I learn much better by reading instead of watching a video.

I would prefer PDF as well because I would prefer carrying paper around rather than having to bring an iPad. Also, watching on mobile is too small.

Hey Freddie and Warriors... So my 2 cents is... It depends on the content.

VIDEO = if its showing me how to complete a task online!

PDF = if it requires thinking & writing down answers (ie. Laying out your Info-Product )

P.S. Quick tip for anyone interested on how I create PDF's easily from videos...

There is a software called SnapFlow (for Mac & think PC too) that opens a video into
a timeline and allows you to snap pictures at various point you choose in timeline...
And then you can export all the images one shot.

Then I'll use a software such as Clarify-It or ScreenSteps which lets you create steps
by simply filling in blanks... Title, Quick Description & Image for each step!

Then you can export them as PDF or Word Doc with Table of Contents and all
which are all put together for you on auto-pilot.

    Hope this helps!

It highly depends on what the content is about

Definitely a pdf, I really don't like watching instructional videos and would rather read.

Personally, I prefer a PDF. I understand that video is popular and gives the impression of added value when it is included but I like reading a PDF or word file. If you are creating product, maybe consider including both. That way, your customers will be satisfied no matter what their preference is.
