Guidance on getting to the next level

Good Day! Me and my friend decided to make a website which was football(Soccer) based it all came about from Facebook, pretty much each day we would just talk about football and we decided, sod it we can make a website and see what other people think, low and behold 4 and a bit months later we have had over 173,000 page views on our website without spending any money at all really (except hosting)

Bread And Butter Football is the name of it LINKY It is basically a football portal for discussion, People can submit there own articles and build there own audience on the website via friend requests. Plus the website has over 46 football teams on it which are basically supporter groups and each one of those has a forum for people to discuss there team with there club supporters instead of visiting a number of places.

So thats the website, however I have no experience for the next stage, We are beginning to make a little bit of money via the betting affiliates on the website, we gain 35% for each time someone wins a bet which is fantastic, however we want to use the money we are making effective, ie Boost our ranking, Cheap advertising etc

What do you recommend to do next? (Also keep it simple) I am a novice in the world of making more money with the money we are making

Thanks Again

Ash

That's a great looking site Ash - well done. Is it basically Wordpress with some addons? If so, can you tell us which?

To attempt to help you a bit, these are some of the ways you could grow:

    More Traffic

Look at ways to increase your traffic. There's a shed-load of ideas here about that.

    Better Monetisation

    Affiliate programs
    Adsense
    Sell your own products

    Diversify

Take the same idea i.e. user-maintained blog/forum and start again in another niche.

Always remember that to get to the next level requires different thinking from what got you here

    Good luck,

    Will

    Ash,

    Good looking website.

Here in North America we don't call it football. We call it soccer.

You can do so much with your website.

    1. You can sell regular affiliate programs there that talk about your niche.

    2. You can add Adsense ads so that when someone clicks on them, you earn a commission. It is pretty low but when you get a lot of people each day, your income can range from $0-$300 depending how many people click on it.

    3. You can create your own product and then recruit affiliates from your website.

    4. You can ask people to pay a fee to post their ads on your website.

Last thing......I don't personally think that you need to pay for traffic. 173,000 page views is damn good in my book.

yup you dont really need any paid traffic because that amount of page views is more than enough. Great site btw!

The "next level" simply requires that you determine or discover WHAT your visitors will BUY.

Market research, plain and simple. You're a fan yourself. It's not like some newbie making a blog about what he doesn't know about. You know about this sport.

So what do YOU buy? That's your first clue.

Then either make a great offer to your visitors for something you can buy or some affiliate offer.

My point is...you are interested in the same things as your visitors. You have an advantage because of that. This doesn't have to be complicated in your case. Just decide what you would buy....they'll probably buy it too.

With your traffic I would sell banner space. Your visitors are not in the buying mood, so it is hard to make money from affiliate ads. But it is great for institutional marketing.

Your logo is pretty good, I would do t-shirts, etc via cafepress or whatever you prefer. Not sure how much you will sell, but you work only one time. And you could use these as reward for contests to engage participation, or as reward.

You could also sell football sport gear, or even do sponsored articles (just make sure you do this in a way it doesn´t kill your credibility). Maybe energy drinks? (look into sambazon, they have great stuff and an affiliate program).

Yes - I use TweetAdder3 which is awesome for stuff, Twitter and Facebook is our main traffic source with people sharing content , I think only 11% of traffic is search engines which I want to increase.

if you manage to comply with the guidelines, you could go after google news. Being part of universal search, news can give you a window on first page for keywords you can only dream of

Getting into Google News - Google News (publishers) Help

one smaller way but easy to build backlinks (and borderline spammy, but most methods are): find ning sites related somehow to your niche and add the rss feed to your personal page. I have a ning community and tolerate this far. Do not think you will have issues.

          EDIT: forgot about this...

If you go down the affiliate marketing route then there's quite a few things you can sell, although you'll definitely need to test and tweak everything. You could even think about paid membership or writing an ebook.

I would look into football shirts and other merchandise such as autographs, old match programmes and any other memorabilia or collectibles; tickets; games such as Football Manager and FIFA - pretty much everyone I know who likes football has bought one of these games; subscription to Sky or streaming sites; paid weekly betting tips; betting sites affiliate.

There's a lot of ways to monetize but you just have to find out which ones will work the best for your site.

You've got some great content on there, well done. Liked the interview about racism and managerial diversity.

I would try out some different monetization options and see what brings you the best return. At the moment you've got three different Sky Bet banners on the same page which is a bit overkill. I'd apply for an Adsense account and give that a go in one of the spots.

Do the various football club shops have an affiliate program? That's what I'd be asking. Or if one of the official resellers do. JD Sports do:
JD Sports affiliate programme - Affiliate Fundamentals

What I'd probably do is apply to their program, then have a chat with the affiliate manager and see if you can get a deep link banner to go to their individual team kit sales page, then link those from each of the team pages on your site. Hope that makes sense...

Thanks, I do have an adsense account, I am in the process of sorting out the banners on the website just not had a good chance to sit down and plan where to put each banner.

I do have an Adsense account, however the adverts for the niche decreased alot as the season went on, at the start we made a decent amount however once the adverts dried up it lowered, a lot!

I would run some advertising, do more free marketing in your niche, and start placing slots on your site for advertising. I'm sure folks in your niche would jump on this - especially considering the amount of traffic that you get each month.
