Smashwords - anyone used this site?

Just wondering if anyone has experience of using Smashwords.

I was wondering if it automatically formats your book for the different sites.

For Kindle I believe formatting is needed.

Any advice appreciated

aprilm - Thank you for that.
Wish I had a Kindle to read it though.
Shame nobody seems to have heard of this site
I thought it would be quite popular.

    Yogini

Do you have the name of the Fiverr person who did the formatting?

Would be helpful for me to pass the book to someone trustworthy for formatting purposes.

    Thanks

Smashwords is for the Sony Ebook Reader. It's like a Kindle, but I dont think it gets as much publicity and traffic as kindle does. But put your product up on there, and start profiting. There's a free book about how to upload your first ebook to Smashwords. PM me for it.

      That's correct, but only partially.

Smashwords is usually the second place that eBook authors submit after their book has been on Amazon (many wait the 90 days to run it through KDP Select first).

Smashwords accepts submissions in EPUB format and can distribute to
      • Barnes & Noble Nook
      • Apple iBookStore
      • Kobo
      • Sony eReader

As well as their own eBookstore.

While you can join to submit to all of those stores independently and can get a slightly better profit there are a few advantages to using Smashwords.
      • You submit to the iBookstore for free
      • You have only one file to submit
      • For B&N, it's the only way non-US authors can get in the Nook store

As for the Smashwords guide, it's available in every format known at this link for free:

      https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/145431

A few other free guides, good for both Smashwords and eBook creation in general:

Smashwords — Smashwords Style Guide — A book by Mark Coker

Smashwords — Smashwords Book Marketing Guide — A book by Mark Coker

      Hope this helps

Yes, I use Smashwords, but in the last couple of months I have found that it is much more lucrative to go direct to most of those sites.

At long last, smashwords now has the option of uploading EPUB formated books.
This is a God send as the word .doc file upload NEVER worked for me and many of my author friends!

But the EPUB format is perfect and should have been available from the start. Now it's available, uploading into their premium account is much easier. I use Ultimate Ebook Creator which generates perfect EPUB files.

If I recall correctly, Smashwords charges a fee for each ebook you sell through them.

A couple days ago I came across bookbaby(dot)com. It is owned by the same folks as CDbaby. It looks like they can put your book into the various formats, get it into iTunes for iBooks, and even sell audio book versions if you have it audio recorded.

They charge a one-time fee, and no continued payment every time a book sells.

It may also be worth taking a look at it.

BookBaby? Lol this Derek Sivers guy is a genius. I was a fan of CD Baby for several years until ReverbNation caught my eye. But I always have faith in this guy nonetheless.

I published a bunch of books through Smashwords about a year ago without issues. I just tried publishing again a few days ago, and it gave me that dreaded "cover image not big enough" message-- bummer.

Troy, i suggest you spend an hour or two reading through their monumental guide. It will save you more money in the long run if you plan on publishing frequently. Once you digest the information, you can format your books just as fast (if not faster) than a Fiverr person. Good luck.

**EDIT** Old Thread Alert. Anyway, hope you've gotten those questions answered by now, Troy.

I've started using the Kindle Select program so I guess I am restricted from putting my book anywhere else.

That said - I am disappointed at the sales.
One would think from reading some of the other threads and WSO's that Kindle is a way to quick riches.

What are your niches? you don't have to give an exact answer, but are you publishing fiction/non-fiction in general?

Anyway, i usually publish my books in multiple places (only some of them go on KDP Select.) The money tends to add up this way, in my case. For example, there's one book that earns me more money on B&N than on Amazon. Yet, i have another book that's doing the complete opposite.

Dating - I went into a sub niche - online dating.

I've been told the book is good and I produced a set of videos also.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, but for $2.99 I thought there may be one or two takers after a month.

I only used it for an affiliate website. I used the mysmashaffiliate plugin if anyone is interested, just google it.

Are you a Smashwords affiliate? It seems Smashwords will pay people 11% of any sales they generate for authors. I think that's pretty mean. I'd be willing to pay 5 times that, and I have six books on Smashwords currently.

Smashwords is very good if you don't manually want to upload to another ten systems.

It's not just for sony ereader - that's nonsense. You can upload your details and then when you get into their premium catalogue you will be listed on barnes and noble(nook)/Kobo Books/Apple bookstore et al

It's perfect for getting your e-book to multiple outlets in one click - THIS book is now on WHSMITH in the UK (kind of prestigious!) and it was uploaded through Smashwords, completely free!

Yes smashwords is perfect, use it in conjunction with KDP and you're all set!

They even list all erotica genres
