How to monetize our site - PR5, 25K unique visits, site is 16 y/o

Hello WarriorForum ,

After reading this forum for the last couple of years we (gf and I) finally decided to buy an up-and-running website and join the forum.

Using techniques found on the net we found a website aligned with our passion and the owner agreed to sell it. The website is PR5, it has anywhere between 20 to 30K unique visits per month, has 900+ backlinks and it is approximately 16 years old.

The previous owner had done very little to monetize on it. The site contains approximately 200 HTML pages of which approximately 10 of them bring 85% of the traffic. The site ranks in the first page of google for keywords such as "all natural, MSN, cat's claw, urine therapy.." A good number of the pages content is pretty random and not aligned with those 10 pages.

I changed the design of the top 10 pages, added Amazon links and Google adsense. The site generates barely a couple hundred dollars per month mostly coming from adsense. I want to fix that!

I would like to get advice from the experienced users for the following:

- since the website is purely HTML pages. What platform should I consider using (e.g. wordpress) since I have limited programming skills?

- For the next few months we are traveling so we are thinking about keeping it as a content website but are open to the idea of drop-ship model. What online generating revenues would you suggest based on what we have described above?

- Should we remove the pages that are not aligned with the main content of the website or should we keep so that they generate traffic?

Thank you very much for your advice!

Thank you! Any ideas on who has the best payment for health advertisement? I feel that google adsense is not very good and is definitely not making a good contribution to our funds

Health is a very profitable niche, my friend. I recommend that you look at something like SellHealth, an affiliate network that specializes in health products. Supplements might be a great fit for this website.

The FIRST thing you need to do is start building a list. Put together some kind of ebook, or an email course on cleansing or something (not my niche... you'd probably know best) and give them an incentive to give you their email address.

Setup an auto-responder sequence to offer those folks more value, and when you have them nice and warmed up, sell them some of those health affiliate products.

It wouldn't surprise me if you can turn that $xxx/month into $x,xxx per month pretty easily.

get an auto-responder and build a list, register on cj.com and search for related affiliate products, apply to all and some should accept you as an affiliate instantly, paste the banners onto the site, and blast emails to your subscribers with useful info and affiliate offers

Since you're already set up with Amazon why not really dig into that and create some review pages? Use those top 10 pages to figure out what people are curious about/interested in and pick a high-end product that would be meaningful. Amazon won't give you much by just sticking ads on a vaguely related page, but make it about the products and you'll get much better conversions.

Since the site is heavily content focused you could also do a "weekly sales roundup" post for good deals on natural health products. Visitors will have a reason to check in or travel from you to Amazon/other affiliates.

Those are great numbers. One thing you want to be careful about is screwing up what you have going. Converting a high traffic site like that to WordPress is not an easy game. It's quite easy to make a mistake so I'd put that off until you absolutely have to do it.

Thank you for the words of encouragement and for the advice on how to proceed! I wonder if I should focus first on that or if should first get the site on a new platform where then it would be easier to add pluggings and add content..

Thank you! it seems that the email list and auto-responder are a must. Any recommendations on which programs/services to use for this. I was thinking MailChimp and Batchbook?

Great advice! My only concern is that I'm afraid of changing the content of the pages to much because it might affect the ranking. Should I create a review page and then add a link to my high ranking page?

This is the first time that I hear this! What type of mistakes should I be concerned about? Any reading materials that you can suggest on what might go wrong? Is wordpress the best option for a content heavy website?

Not clear how moving from static HTML pages built mostly in the 90s to a wordpress site will affect SERP? can you clarify?

        Many things.

A 16 year old site is perfect for turning it into the leader in that niche, make it a dominant site.

I would turn the site into an information blog.

Focus on getting signups, selling ads and creating high quality content. Test with different products both physical and digital. Find products that sell well and through those into follow up email blasts.

Changing the platform in which the site is on will not effect its rankings. However, what will effect the ranking is changing the URLs of each of those pages. Which means you will have to be very careful when changing it over, and make sure you do it QUICKLY.

I would hire someone who has experience changing a static website over into a wordpress run site.

You don't want to give Google a chance to find any 404 errors on your site, because it will take those pages out of its search engines once it gets a number of those.
