Getting the Guru's attention?

Here's a hypothetical question for you all:

- Suppose you had developed the "worlds greatest product", a unique masterpiece that you knew would sell a bazillion copies and would easily become a marketing legend. But you had no list and no marketing budget and you wanted to get to market ASAP before someone else beats you to it.

How would you get the attention of the big "gurus", the ones with millions of targeted subscribers to their lists and whose endorsement alone would probably ensure a successful launch? The ones we've all heard of - you know the ones I mean!

These guys & gals must get a mountain of unsolicited e-mail asking for JV's and endorsements - how do you get past all that and make them aware that you have a once in a lifetime opportunity waiting for them?

Thanks

Bill

    Hey Bill,

I'd approach it from a couple of angles. First, I'd pull out every contact I have and find out who knows who, and find out how much sway they have. If you have good contacts, you can usually get a foot in there. Then it's a matter of pitching yourself and idea.

Secondly, I'd find out the date of the nearest (time wise) big seminars, and try to find out who is going to be there. You can usually find forums where marketers are discussing it, and post that they are attending. Then I'd sit down and write a good letter that explains who you are, how this product or service can help them, etc... Then ask them if they can spend a few minutes with you while you are both attending the seminar. Some may respond, and some may not.

Or, attend the conference and make sure you are seen or noticed in a casual way, striking up conversations. You can do this in group or one on one. Some marketers simple start conversations with people too so they get to know other people. You'll have to be sociable for this one.

There are more ways too. You can probably gather some in this thread if it gets rolling.

Why not think outside of the box and run your idea by a local Angel Investor...They tend to focus only on ROI...If they see a bazillion $$ - Just a thought

    Here's the thing...

You don't have a "once in a lifetime" opportunity for them.

Products don't move product. Marketing moves product.

Products are a commodity - everyone's got one and they're not worth much.

It's the lists (relationships) and marketing that puts the value on a product.

So you don't really bring much to the table.

If your product is good don't be surprised if they just swipe it and keep all the profits. Seen it done a couple of times.

That said, if you want them to promote you it's pretty obvious how to do it...

Become friends with them. (Notice they all promote each other?) Go to seminars and meet them in person. Get them drunk and make them sign agreements when they're at their weakest

So I should factor alcohol into my marketing budget? As I no longer drink should I outsource that task?

Seriously Kyle you make a lot of good points, I appreciate your post. Meeting them in person and developing a relationship probably is the best way to go about it, and not divulging too much initially is also a very good precaution.

      Thanks

Don't forget to write it off on your tax

The other method I forgot -- buy stuff off them.

Not ebooks and low-end stuff. But high-ticket stuff. Coaching etc.

Implement and become a success story.

Sell their stuff as an affiliate.

        Give before you receive.

Alex Mandossian talks about this, the relationship goes...

        Student -> Affiliate -> Partner.

He explicitly states that as the "rite of passage".

Sorry Craig that won't work - I'm too busy developing the worlds greatest product!

Maybe I should just buy everything they put out?

That's good one!!! They don't care... and I think you'll go
      bankruptcy before the launch.

Seminars are the best way. Approach them, and show interest in them by asking questions. If they show interest back, then reveal your product.

The above method costs money for the seminars. A free alternative is to catch their attention using Twitter. Just about all the 'gurus' are using twitter. It is growing huge! Do a search under the 'gurus' name and then @message them. After they see you have the "worlds greatest product" , they will definately promote it.

Just email them a proposal. "Gurus" are only human. Send an email, offer a quick proposal, and provide proof of your product. Everyone likes to make money. Just remember, A Guru started off somewhere, and had to get contacts and promotion. . .

In 99.99% cases, those "Gurus" won't see your email. They receive
100's of JV proposals EVERY day and that's why your email will either:

1- jump on the trash folder

2- will be opened (lucky you!) by a company employee who could either...

1- send it to the trash folder

2- send it to a superior officer, who could...

      ... well, repeat the process.

There are other ways to attract them...

Yes, there are other ways... BUT I go with, "The more shots taken, the more goals. . ." People have to always remember.. EVERYONE is a human. Some will get the email... others not. You could also "Get The Phone Number." I won't go into that, someone might try it and get themselves into trouble, BECAUSE no # is unlisted.

Yeah, getting a personal phone # is even harder! Of course, you can reach the company #, but then again start 1-2 ball game.

So Bill, why are you assuming you need the super gurus?

There are thousands of second and third tier marketers who'd love to have a really big, in-demand product to promote. Look around your own niche. Find the players, study - really study - their sites. Write 'em some exclusive articles or promote some of their products, or share some tips for free. If you're a programmer, code them a customized app they can use to automate something they do every day. Or point them to a logical JV partner and suggest how they can put together a deal (do this with nothing in it for you).

In other words, do 'em a favor of some kind. People remember - and like - folks who look out for them. And if you don't have time for this stuff, make the time. This is what business is about. Relationships. Everything else is just boxes on the shelf.

That's why a number of folks have suggested that you go to live seminars. You won't believe how open and approachable the gurus are - yes, even the big ones - just because they've met you in person.

Desorcy gave you a killer suggestion earlier, and you blew it off. My suggestion - slow down a bit, go back and really pay attention to the underlying idea in what he wrote. Spend some time thinking it through.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
    Charles

I second everything said above, especially promoting their products first--but that does take time.

I would recommend sending out proposals to the big guys by Express Mail or FedEx. It's more likely to get opened!!!

Find the guru's product pages and subscribe to their mini-course or newsletter (whatever they ask you to opt-in to). Both aWeber and GetResponse auto-responders require a physical mailing address to appear at the bottom of each email sent out. That's how you get their physical mailing address.

This works infinitely better than sending emails to them!
