Wordpress question, is the site building the same if I use it from other webhost instead of them?

What I mean to say is we can directly buy our own domain and host all from wordpress which is for $99 per year.

But if I build a site using wordpress from hostgator and other webhosts like that, will it still be the same?

No, it's not the same. While the two platforms share some code, WordPress.com and the free WordPress.org software (which you can install and host at HostGator or anywhere else) are not the same. The WordPress.com service lets you use less than 1% of the available themes and plugins for WordPress, plus you do not have the flexibility of editing the site code yourself.

Oh so I only get to use 1% if I use it from Hostgator and other webhosts. Got it. Thanks! You see I really find WP to be a whole lot easier to use to build a website but I think it's cheaper for me to use it along with a webhost that I'll buy.

      Hi,

      actually dan meant the reverse.

You will get 1% if you use wordpress.com

and the rest with hostgator etc.,

Whoa... Thanks by the way. Now I'm confused, does that mean that hostgator's wordpress is better than wordpress.com it self if I use hostgator? Because in wordpress.com it's just 1%.

    Yes.

Signing up for WordPress.com is like buying a new home. It's yours, you can put whatever you want in it, but you can't really change how the house is built.

Downloading the WordPress software from WordPress.org and running it on HostGator is like hiring a construction company to build a house for you. It's more complicated, you have more things to manage, but you have total control over how the house will look and work.

That's a pretty crappy analogy, actually. Hopefully you get the point anyway.

It's not crappy, it's incredible! Just that and I understood the difference already. Well, not the entire technical aspect of it of course but the way how it would work. Thank you! I'd be hanging on to host gator then. It's about $10 per month and with wordpress, that should work now for me once I get my hands on it. Thanks again!

Hi Jensha, if you host a blog at wordpress.com, you're not allowed any form of monetization at all, anyway, so for a marketer it isn't really an option.

You don't necessarily need to "get your hands on" wordpress software, if you host at Hostgator: it's already there, included in their C-Panel and available as a one-click installation. (But it can still be installed "manually" (by File Transfer Protocol) instead, which is typically more secure.)

It's a very good idea never to register a domain-name at the same place where you host its website. Keep the two functions (registration and hosting) separate. So if you already have hosting at Hostgator, don't register domain-names there too - just use another registrar instead. It's quite important!

If you already have your hosting account you can install WordPress easily on your site with Fantastico, which is located in your cPanel.
