SCRIBD and SEO for Documents

I have a large and growing Directory of Board Game Rules. The Documents are all in .pdf. Many of the .pdf files have a link back to a related product which is clickable in SCRIBD,

I have some of the files located on SCRIBD and some on my Blog.

My question is, before I go and upload them all, in terms of SEO, where is the best place for me to store these documents?

Should I use SCRIBD and where possible link back to my site or is it better SEO to just have all the rules in my Blogs Rule Directory.

The way I see it, the link back is good (if Google counts it - they are all no-follow) but if the Directory is on my site then that means people are spending more time on my site reading and time on my site is something Google also likes.

Would love to hear other peoples' thoughts.

If the pdf's are duplicates of your onsite content (that is, content that is already on your site, but reformatted to pdf) then put them on your site, but block the directory hosting them within your robots.txt file.

Allow your visitors to download and share them (this will help enormously in terms of creating viral link juice)

If you DO put them on scribd, be sure to use trackable links so that you can measure its effectiveness.

In addition to what John has just said, make sure whenever you are dealing with what might be considered as duplicate content, that you put the original on your site FIRST. Then you should ping that content. This way Google will recognize that this is the original source and give your site credit.

Then (perhaps after 24hrs) you can post the content elsewhere on the web. Be sure to ping, tweet and social share each bit of content to get max SERP love!!

    Hi David,

I like your thinking, but I think you may be slightly off.

In my humble opinion (which you can take with a pinch of salt) I would look at article directories like Scribd as traffic sources instead of SEO.

Put some good pdf's up that link back to your site, then have the landing pages full of high quality content so that people spend more time on your site. This is what Google will love...a reduced bounce rate.

    Regards,
    Azu.

My experience scribd is awesome for backlinks. I don't mind if the links will be give you huge traffic, but to rank page 1 on G is so easy if combine with my favorite bookmark for each of your url of the PDF sites.

These days content is King on Google, make sure that G don´t see your content as duplicates. I would make sure that the blog get´s the content credit. Link wheels used to work well, but they are not as effective any more. You should have some external linking, but don´t forget to have some (not many) internal linking as well between you posts and pages. This makes your site look more topic relevant to Google.

Thanks for the Advice. The four options I have are:

    1. Have all .pdf's on my site. Visitor will be on my site as long as it takes to download .pdf

    2. Have .pdf only on SCRIBD. I benefit from links to relevant content. e.g. Visitor is at SCRIBD for rules but can follow link to related product.

    3. Have the .pdf's in both places.

    4. I see SCRIBD now has an embed feature. Would it be to my advantage to place the .pdf's in SCRIBD and then use the embed feature on my site so that they are reading and Downloading the Documents while on my site?
