Do Low Content Pages Effect a Whole Website?

I know that this is probably answered all over the forum, but I've searched and there are so many related threads that don't really answer my questions specifically.

I have a site reviewing laptop computers and I am trying to cover as many as I can to help customers find laptops according to specific features and specifications. As many reviews as I write, there are still tons of products that need covered.

Do small pages with little content bring down the whole site? I want pages for each laptop, giving it's basic features, specifications and price comparisons. I've heard that EVERY page on a site needs to be high quality, but how can I get around this?

Think of the users first. Do the "small pages with little content" deliver value to the user? In most cases, they probably don't. But, in your case, the goal of your site is "to help customers find laptops according to specific features and specifications." So, if those pages have those features and specifications on them, then you are fulfilling the mission of your site. The reviews are gravy.

So, I wouldn't think they would hurt you. What would hurt you is if another site has the features, specifications AND reviews. So, a search engine would see that as more authoritative than your site which just offers features and specifications for that particular product.

Overall, if the other sites are delivering more value to the user, they are going to outrank you, in theory. They have more content overall than you do. So, people are going to use those sites because they have more information than you do.

And that's why I think that not having those pages would be more harmful than having those pages.

Let's say, for example, there are 1,000 laptop models total in the market today. Let's say you currently stand at 50 reviews on your site. Now, if I go to your site to look up specifications, and you only have the models you've reviewed, I can only check the specifications on 50 different laptops. Meanwhile, I may be able to go to your competitor(s) and lookup the specs on all 1,000 laptop models. Which is going to be more useful for me? Which is more likely to help me find the model I'm looking for?

Naturally, it's the sites with all 1,000 models listed, not yours. And, the next time I want to buy a laptop, why would I bother coming to your site? You don't have the breadth of information your competitors do.

Of course, you may lose people because you don't have reviews on all 1,000 models, while your competitors might. But, on the other hand, if I'm using your site to search on specs and features, I can use your site to find the right model(s) for me, and then check reviews on Amazon (presumably through your affiliate link?). But, if you don't have all the models available, because you only post the ones you've reviewed, your site may not be as useful for me.

For your type of site, having the features and specifications even without reviews sounds like it may be important to its core purpose--the purpose for which people would use your site. So, in that case, yes, include those "light content" pages. You want people to come to your site and use it as intended. You want them to find what they are looking for so that when a friend asks about laptops, they can say "Hey, I used this site..." and share your site with them. When they're in a forum and someone asks about laptops, you want them to say "Hey, this site lists the specs for EVERY laptop out there..."

If users are finding value in your site, the search engines will take notice.

Thank you Dan, that was very helpful. I'm doing my best to make a viewer friendly site. I was just hesitant about small pages because I heard that small pages hurt the overall domain since the penguin update.
