How To Mass Unfollow in Twitter?

Hi,

I have learnt from Dana that Your Twitter Karma allows you to do that.

But a moment ago, it reported error saying that it cant because the followers is nearing 10,000...

Error message:
Twitter API transport error, cannot continue. (Insert picture of Fail Whale here.) Try again in a few minutes, or an hour later. Note: As your total friends and followers approaches 10,000, Twitter's API becomes unusuable and Twitter Karma may not work for you.

Need help in looking for other resource to mass unfollow...

thanks in advance.

Cheers,
John

    John,

    According to them,

Don’t expect bulk operations of more than 80 or so people to work. Or, rather, only expect the first 80 or so to work and the rest to be ignored. This is a function of the Twitter API rate limit; once Twitter Karma hits it, it stops.

    Hi John,

I am curious. Since I am not using Twitter, why do you want to do so? I thought the more followers you have, the better. Sorry if I sound "naive."

He's not getting his followers to unfollow him, he wants to unfollow most of them!

I see a lot of information about following people so that they'll follow you. Then the next day unfollow them. I don't get it. Is there some negative effect on following too many people or do you just want to look cool and have everyone follow you and you only follow a few?

It's a tactic to fake looking like some kind of guru or expert that people want to follow. People see you have a lot of followers but follow only a few back, so they think maybe you're worth following if so many people follow you.

But, it's also a good sign that you really aren't very social. There are a lot of people that have a rather dim view of people who use such tactics.

        Thanks Dan for being sensible.

I do unfollow people that do this to me or those that don't follow back after a few weeks or so...I don't like the attitude that many have when they think you aren't worth following. Aside from that, I'll follow most anyone.

Remember too that there are certain milestones in terms of Twitter followers past which you may not go until certain things have been met. e.g. you cannot follow more than 2000 twitters until you have 2000 followers. Hence where people have 1800-1900 followers but are themselves already following 2000, they may well unfollow a couple of hundred (that are not following them anyway) and add new followers (who will hopefully follow them back) until they get past the limit.

The limits are not hard and fast either - it appears like Twitter sets limits a bit like Google sets page rank i.e. exact algorithm is not stated. However through monitoring by various people an idea of what's going on has emerged. Search Google for Twitter follower limits and you'll find articles on this.

      Hope that helps.

      Best regards, Bob Lewis

Exactly. To put it another way, if you want to follow more than 2000 people, you have to have 2000 followers. The only "fair" way to follow more than 2000 is is to unfollow those that don't follow you back.

Problem with the Twitter API is that you only get 100 API calls per hour. Couple that with the fact that you can only pull info for (maximum) 100 followers at a time through a single API call, and you're limited in what you can do through the API once you reach 10,000 followers (100*100).
