Is it safe to have both your domain and hosting with one company?

Hi should i do this?
Irish domains (.ie) cost 30 euro per year. I have two of them with the leading domain registrars in the country. I got hosting with a reasonably new hosting company (also in this country) and they asked if i would transfer my domains over to them and that if i did i would get the next 3 years free (3 years without having to pay domain renewal fees).

But it is not risky having my domain and hosting with the one company or is it totally safe?

Thanks.

Yes, this is perfectly safe. After all, you can't really do much with one and not the other. You might as well have them both or neither.

It's always better to have your domain with a reliable company. You can backup your website, but not domains. I would prefer to stay safe with a reputed domain registrar than go for a free deal on domain with a new registrar. You can get hosting from any provider and use that by changing the DNS entries with the existing domain registrar.

I would always advise keeping your hosting company and domain registrar separate. If you were ever to have an issue with your hosting company, it would then be a relatively straightforward matter to transfer your hosting elsewhere. That wouldn't be posssible if the host also controlled your domain. It's the kind of problem that could seriously affect your ability to continue in business.

Yeah you see the crowd i registered my domains with are excellent but the domain renewal fees are 30 each per year!!

However this new hosting company are say, "Bring you domains over to use and the next 3 years will be free of domain renewal fees and thereafter only 20 a year".

But if i do i will have my HOSTING and DOMAINS with them, the price is a compelling reason to do it only i am not sure of the consequences should something happen with them.

In such a case, the consequences could be that you won't have hosting and will lose access to your domain. Is it worth the risk?

I never host my domain with my domain registrar remember the saying "Don't put all eggs in one basket" and just as Alexa say it's "completely wrong".

It is not safe at all - and even more critical with a new hosting company that is unproven.

I've seen problems with the same-host/same-registrar twice and here's what happened:

      1. hosting company went out of business - gone - poof (new, small hosting). The people with sites hosted there had no way to transfer their domains.

      2. hosting company (fairly new) had a major server crash that took weeks to resolve. In the end, fees were charged to those who wanted to change their DNS - and by that time sites had been down for weeks.

You might say "they can't do that" - but it happens. If something goes wrong you are at the mercy of one hosting company. It's not worth the risk - and it's easy to avoid by keeping domains and hosting in two different places. If this new hosting company runs into trouble - you can go to the registrar and move your DNS quickly - it's worth the extra money.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

  • I personally like to keep them separate.

You should do regular backups of your websites+databases, and if your hosting company blocks your account for whatever reason (can happen overnight out of the blue), you can simply re-upload the webinar+database into another hosting, and rename the DNS redirects from your domain registrar console. That way, you can have your site back up and running within the day in the new hosting account.

I agree with you about Hostgator, Shaun, but I think you misinterpreted the question asked here?

It wasn't "should you have all your domain-names registered with one registrar and all your sites hosted with one host?".

It was "should you have your site hosted in the same place in which its domain-name is registered?"

The answer is an emphatic "no".

I agree with some of the others, this is perfectly safe, use the offer. Hosting is useless without a domain and in the general case (you could flip the domain I guess ), a domain is useless without the hosting.

      honestly

keep them seperate... your asking for trouble if you place them in the same company, they will take control over your site if anything was to happen.

Alexa smith has explained it very well, I highly advise to keep them seperate.

That's an unusual request for a hosting company. I would wonder why they wanted you to do that. It is always safer to host your domains at your registrar and do your site hosting at a webhost and not mix the two.

Your webhost goes down or someone makes a spam complaint and your host suspends your account ... you have complete control of the domain at your registrar and can just redirect it to a new host.

Right on and please make sure you are doing regular backups of your websites too.

I use Godaddy for domains because they handle that service with perfection. I have not used hosting with them because I have heard horror stories about their hosting. I use hostgator and any time I had any technical issues their live chat customer service has been incredible and speedy.

The recent kerfuffle with GoDaddy should be proof enough that it's a best practice to keep them separate. Prevents lost business...

    Just my 2 cents...
