What are some of the best ways to find blogging clients? What types of companies or websites do you target for potential blogging prospects?

Sites that constantly publish content. This is one of the easiest jobs to find, because it's pretty simple to come up with a list of successful blogs. They always need more people to write interesting, quality stuff. Same goes for businesses that publish a blog, though they may be looking for people with specific knowledge of their industry, or want to keep it in-house.

Sometimes these sites will explain how people can become contributors, but most of the bigger ones will be hush-hush.

Do you know how to pitch site owners and editors? You need to know how to do it and do it well if you want to get assignments.

What is the best way to pitch a blog? Is it better to propose a guest post first, send a query letter, or just offer your services from the beginning?

Thanks for the tips. How would you suggest that we pitch these blog owners about the importance of keeping their blogs updated with fresh content?

I'd suggest getting on their mailing lists. Many of them will send out invitations to apply for blogging jobs. That's how I got a gig with WPMU DEV. One thing you do need to be careful for with those kinds of sites though is that the work can easily take over your schedule and leave little room for serving other clients. It's a good idea to diversify your client base, so when you land a big gig like this, be sure you don't over extend yourself.

I made that mistake a few years back writing for local.com. Was getting about 10k in work from them a month, then they hired a new project manager who already had her own writing team that she wanted to work with. Got edged out pretty quick and it left a big hole in my clientele that took about 5 months to fill back up.

I suggest building a good diverse client base instead of relying on only a few big clients.

    Good luck

I had a lot of luck writing blogging specific ads on Craigslist. It helps if you have samples to show - I always linked to my writing portfolio. The ads I wrote focused on blogging specifically over freelance writing in general were much more effective.
