I don't feel awkward, I'm just easily distracted so I'm way more productive in my own space.

Where ever you go today, people are on their phones, ipads, laptops, etc. Why would you feel awkward?

Who cares what others are thinking. They can't see what you are doing. Most of the time they are worried what others are thinking about them.

If you work and someone asks what you are doing, you got a new prospect right there.

There was a photo on reddit a few days ago, of a woman who had her desktop (not a laptop) on a chair, and the monitor and keyboard on the table, at Starbucks.

I don't feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, but I won't go to any sites that require a log in, when I'm using public wifi. It is not secure.

A neighbor checked his email at our local Starbucks and an a few hours later he was locked out of his account. It turned into a serious problem.

Working at a local place can be disturbing sometime. Prefer to work at a personal place.

I feel awkward doing video blogs in public. I did one from the local lake the other day and I kept looking around feeling paranoid - all my subscribers said it made it look like I was in a Blair Witch project movie or something. LOL!

Haha... Ya Tiffany, I've tended to avoid the old coffee shop videos myself. I have done a few when walking along a river or at the beach though.

Considering I work from my home office I don;t have to venture out into public spots like coffee shops to work very often.

However, I meet a number of my clients there when meetings are required, and I never once thought it was awkward. In fact it would be more awkward if I met them in my office at my house.

So, I just wouldn't let it be a factor. No one is paying attention anyway, so why worry about it.

Now recording videos in a coffee shop wold be a bit weird.. but I've seen people do it.

I don't venture out a lot to work but when I have its usually to starbucks.

I don't find it awkward at all I love a change of scenery every now and then and coffees are always good... Starbucks is a good place for us nerdy web people to meet lady friends too. Kill two birds with 1 stone

Vlogging in public... thats a whole other story. Hell yea I feel awkward. But I think it will become more and more the norm. If you can get in now and build a following youtube vlogers certainly have it easy!

I like to think how jealous people are when they walk in to Starbucks at lunch time and I am lounging around with my laptop working.

You know they want to ask what the heck you are doing after noticing you there on multiple days.

If I am proud of what I am doing in public, then I don't think that I'll feel awkward about it.

      No, its pretty normal.

Just be considerate of the place you are working at. I feel guilty to sit and work and not buy something if Im at a restaurant.

For my real job I'm out of the office about 4 days of the week. Field work in the morning and then I have to do work from my laptop after that. I started going to libraries, because there is nothing to buy. College libraries often have nice scenery. I just a few years out of college so I don't look too out of place.

You've obviously never been to any of the Starbucks near me, lol.

There are five of them within a 10 minute drive from home and some days I have to hit 2 or 3 before I find a table. They're full of people working away on their laptops.

If I need a power jack, forget it

I have never felt awkward, though I do get annoyed when people ask what I'm doing. And just answering "working" doesn't make them go away lol. However if you have that problem, put headphones on - even if you aren't listening to anything, nobody will bother you.

Having said that, I have never walked into a Starbucks or Panera and NOT seen at least one person on their laptop.

How much do the guys pay to take up space whole day at Startbucks? I can't imagine they would be allowed to work away without buying beverages/food?

I do sometimes work in my local coffee shops, but never could have the courage to do it in Starbucks. They are a different kind of crowd that I don't feel comfortable with. Too posh for my liking.

Depends, sometimes I go the local Starbucks but get discouraged because of the crowds and sloooooow WiFi.

But, it's good to get out - it helps you think different - new ideas come to mind.

If you want to be left alone when working on a laptop in public, there are two things I can recommend:

      1. A tee shirt that says "Ask me about my new screen play."

      2. A pair of rainbow suspenders lined with pin-on buttons that say "Lose weight now - Ask me how."

I'm sure the acceptance of it is largely dependant upon culture.

A person using a laptop in a coffee shop in my town would almost definately be stared at, whereas if it was a coffee shop in New York or London perhaps not though I'd feel pretentious in any location to be honest.

If I'm outside, chances are I'm there to get away from computers.

I don't work out in public as a rule of thumb, however when we lost power last summer for about ten days in the middle of that sweltering heat wave, I did go to McDonald's twice for the WIFI.

I didn't feel uncomfortable at all as the air conditioning was absolutely heavenly! That is until someone asked me if I was Valerie Bertinelli.

I did not know you can feel awkward about it. There are many people out there working in the public space, their job requires that. Nothing to feel awkward about.

I feel like several people do.... dont worry what others are thinking just do your thing.

Also just think how bad it would be working in a cubicle with 50 other people in an office talking on their phones selling the same products day in and day out.... how lucky are we
