Question for Traveling IM'ers: How do you handle large file downloads?

In preparation for a location independent business, I am forcing myself to do more work from the mall. One problem I have bumped into is downloading fairly large files, let's say in the 50mb to 150mb range. At home this would take less than a minute. But at the mall, over an hour.

I'm looking for suggestions from others that might have had this problem.

Thanks,

Joe Mobley

    Hey Joe,

I am using Infinite Storage from Bitcasa (not an affiliate link) and I am LOVING it!!.

It is FREE until the 1st of the year and then it is only $10 a month for unlimited storage. It is an infinite cloud similar to Spotify.

Here is a short interview with the founder and CEO WTF Is 'Infinite Storage'? Bitcasa CEO Tony Gauda Explains

    Cheers,

If you don't mind spending the money and are in an area that has high-speed connections you could either tether to your cell phone or get a data stick for your laptop. The faster 4G connections (eg. LTE) can be similar speeds to what you might get at home.

If that's not an option, it's going to depend on the wireless networks you connect to. You might find some that are faster than others, so you could wait until you're on those to do the bigger downloads.

Or just wait until you're home to do them on the faster connection.

There's really no way to speed up downloads over a slow connection, if you want to download them to your machine.

Getting your own mobile wireless hotspot might be worth looking in to. I use one here in the UK and it's a great bit of kit. Very fast connection, 15gb data allowance per month for the equivalent of about $25 per month. Secure too so no worries about using unsecured networks in coffe shops etc.

    Best,

    Andy.

I tether my phone and turn it into a wifi hotspot the unlimited data is a plus and the connection is fast. Make sure your data are free, you wouldn't want to end pay extra bills because you went over the limit. If you don't have one, might as well find the shop in the mall with the fastest download speed. Lol speed test their connection..if you don't want to do this get a phone with 4g LTE it will save you from hours of downloading files.

    Hello Joe

As a few here know, I live full time on the road touring around in my motor home with solar panels galore on the roof for all of my electricity needs.

For the Internet, I use a 12GB dongle which is actually about the same speed as a home super fast broad band connection.

The latest dongle my service provider has come up with is this one if you can find something comparable in your area, I think it would serve your needs very well.

Huawei E3256 Premium dongle - Discover - Three

Might be worth checking out? At 42mbps it's pretty quick for downloads.

I'm on half that at 21mbps (the last dongle they released before this latest one) and it's perfect for my needs.

    Hope this helps,

    Smoking hot,

It'll be better when I get this wood stove fixed up. At the moment night time when I'm fast asleep it can be right chilly especially if it's below freezing outside.

And last night, like a right plonker, as I was driving along I'd forgotten about a pint of bottled beer in the shelving cabinet immediately above my bed.

Unsecured it fell out whilst driving around a corner, fell to the bed mattress below landing right on top of something resting on the bed of a solid nature and promptly smashed into a 1001 pieces not to mention soaking my duvet with beer.

Not a happy bunny last night sleeping under a single blanket for warmth, was right shivery I can tell you.

Thankfully today the sun is shining, so all my bedding is receiving a good airing.

But on the whole, yes, it's a great lifestyle. You get to meet some fascinating characters too on the road. All just about as batty and eccentric as I am thank goodness. Good to know - I'm not alone doing this in mid winter lol.

        Smoking hot, (yeah right)!

Sorry to go off topic folks, in the words of the sanctimonious old, I mean, the one and only Paul Myers... "drift happens."
