What steps you need to take to turn a website into more like a business?

Say its a standard content site but has become quite successful in that it gets several thousand uniques a day and a good dosage of repeat visitors, how would you then make it more into sort of a business rather than remaining simply a content site? How would you diversify it? I am not talking about about promotional aspects like SEO, social marketing, ect but from an operational standpoint? I know adding your own products (like ebooks) is a start, but what other ways?

Depending on the niche, traffic and site content would determine my cause of action.

The easiest way would be to start selling advertisement space (price depends on things such as unique visitors per month etc), Promoting relevant offers (can be done via ClickBank or Amazon, again depends on Niche) OR you could start using Google AdSense I've found this does work well on content sites, but your earnings, again depend on niche.

Also, since you've got repeat visitors, I would recommend you start building an email list (if your not already) allowing you to easily interact with your readers, and promote offers to them with ease.

Branding, list building, and good content will make your website successful. Not many IMers have just one site in their portfolio, so start branching out and continue doing what world for you.

From a operational standpoint you need to get your visitors on your email list and build a strong relationship with them while providing solutions in the form of products.

based on your question, my conclusion is , it comes to the quality of the user experience factor. Facebook has really good user experience, because people can stay there for hours, several hours a day... wow..
If you can give the visitors what they want based on your niche, that will make them stay longer in your website.. and make them remember your brand and website, they'll visit the website over and over again. It's more to brand image.

To do this, you need to think how the visitors think about your niche, you need to give them what they want. =)

You need to use it to build a list and in turn build a relationship with them. So can you sell affiliate products and your own products for years to come.
