They are subdomains, not domains. Whether that makes them a "no-no for use" is up to each of us to decide (but I wouldn't touch one, myself).

".gb.com" is not a domain extension. The domain of which they're all subdomains is a .com called gb.com.

If you have a UK-only-niche site (as I do), and/or particularly want to attract UK traffic from searches on google.co.uk you'll be giving yourself potential SEO advantages by using a domain-name extension that ends with ".uk" and by hosting the site inside the UK (unless Google's been lying to everyone for years about it, but it's really difficult to imagine why that would be so?).

Sorry - can't really help you with any "opinion" because I've never used a .gb.com subdomain and don't intend to: the above is all factual, not opinion.

Whether you see some ranking well perhaps isn't the key issue, here, though? Isn't what actually matters to you whether collectively they rank better on inside-the-UK Google searches than their "co.uk"/"org.uk" equivalents? And if so, whether there are real reasons for that? (There are, according to Google). I see some Blogspot subdomains "ranking well" too, but it won't encourage me to use one.
