People not clicking confirm email for list

What might help increase the number of people who click to confirm in the confirm-email after they've entered their email to sign up to a list?

Also, what's a typical rate of people not clicking to confirm?

    Hi everyone,

I don't really know this because I usally turn off the option and after they sign up they are automticly sent message one.

And if they don't like it they can unsubscribe at any time.

    I hope it was helpful.

    See you on top

    Erwin.

    Hi applegreensnake,

There will always be a certain number of folks who never get on your list, because they don't click the confirm link.

How many is due in large part to just how compelling and enticing you can make what they are going to get in return.

I guess you're offering some sort of freebie, so try and add an element of curiosity, because that's one of the most powerful motivators.

And most powerful motivator of all is the fear of missing out (which is far more powerful than the promise of gain).

So try and offer a freebie that offers some secret that they might not know. For example ...

    Ten Fatal Mistakes Bloggers Make
    You MUST Avoid.
You see, by mentioning ten mistakes (or seven, if you can't think of ten), your visitor will be hard put to think of that many very quickly, so they will become fearful they might just be making one of these fatal mistakes.

Notice the word 'fatal' - an excellent turbocharger word (think of the movie 'Fatal Attraction').

And you can reinforce this by personalizing the message they get, once they fill in the web form, and remind them to hit that 'confirm' link right away, because they don't want to risk missing out.

    Warmest regards,

    Paul

P.S. Yes, you can side-step the confirmed opt in stage, as erwin suggests, but it puts you at greater risk of being accused of spamming, which is fatal (there's that word again!).

Usually if people click on your opt-in and then never click the confirm button it's because the offer you are presenting isn't compelling enough to really tease them in, but you've peaked their curiosity briefly. Test new copy on your squeeze page.

Even the best copy will have some who never confirm their opt-in and also some will download your product and immediately unsubscribe.

You can design some reward, such as activated users can get the opportunity to draw.

I think it's somewhere around the 30% mark of people who will not confirm their opt in - but that's really just a general statistic. It entirely depends on what your offer is, and how eager they are to get a hold of it.

It will also depend on your traffic source. What is your source of traffic? Is it targeted? Adswap, solo, social, article marketing... are you buying cheap traffic from sources such as adfly etc.,? Along with what everyone else has mentioned, traffic source is a determining factor as well.

I rarely confirm if I've bought a product. Buying a product does not mean that I want to be on a list. It only means that I like the product enough to buy it, but don't want to receive emails.

I suggest just making your email look more interesting will do the thing. It is important that subscribers do the clicking on the confirmation link and the only way to make that happen is make your message more attractive.

I do agree with Paul's suggestion. And I loved the part where he explains the use of the word 'Fatal' and how it works. If I were the person reading the message, I certainly would click on the link cause I'd really don't want to miss out anything.

For the overwhelming majority of marketers, that depends almost entirely on factors outside their own control. Hence the problem.

Explaining to them clearly, in words and with pictures, right after they submit their email address, that your first email might go into their junk/spam folder and that they need to look for it there, whitelist your "sent-from" email address (and how to do that), and so on.

It varies hugely according to the traffic demographics. In niches like "IM" and "MMO" people are familiar with it. If your opt-in is on a knitting-patterns site, many of your customers won't be familar with it and won't work out what to do.

It's possible, with sufficient care, to get the confirmation-rate up to about 90%, but it isn't always easy at all. I think most people are quite pleased if they get it up to 80%.

I now use single opt-in, myself. I find it has many advantages, and that many of the alleged "disadvantages" of it claimed by confirmed-opt-in enthusiasts aren't actually disadvantages at all but are simply based on misconceptions. Just my perspective.

That said, if I were in any IM/MMO niches, I'd use confirmed opt-in, for sure.

I don't use double optin, I lose too many subscribers that way.

when you don't have the double optin, do the prospects go directly onto your list once they have entered their details?

If you want to get better double opt-in response then consider the following:

    - Don't direct them to a thank you page with the "freebie" right away. The "Thank You" page should tell them to confirm the opt-in and to check their spam folders/add you to the white list.

    - In the confirmation email tell them the "freebie" is waiting for them and they'll get the link once they opt-in.

The freebie is then the 1st automated message in your auto-responder sequence.

Most double opt-in setups I see don't convert well because they give away the freebie and still expect people to confirm.

After they give you their email address, on the thank you page afterwards have a clear call to action!

It should say something like, "Thank you for requesting your free gift, in your inbox please click on the link to confirm you want it."

Now I take it one step further and add a picture in my thank you page, so my customers know exactly what they are looking for!

One last tip, always have a clear call to action after you do anything - it will ALWAYS produce you more results

I would not even ask them to double opt in. As soon as they enter their name and email, they should be automatically added to it.

Most people don't confirm and many of them don't even open your emails.

Single opt in where the freebie is delivered in the first email. This does away with needing to confirm and gets at least one email opened.

Don't move away the confirmation link on your setting.

    OR

You’re probably going to get a ton of spam complaints when you send your first few email campaigns.

And if you get too many spam complaints, you’ll notice all your emails getting blocked by major ISPs and spam filters.

You’ll also notice dismal click and open rates.

Why waste money sending emails to a big, unresponsive list of people who don’t want to hear from you?

    Re-Confirm Everybody
One thing you could do is re-confirm your entire list. This means
sending everyone an email that basically says,

    "Okay, we don’t want to
send you email if you don’t want to receive it, so we’re asking you to
click this link if you want to stay on our list. Otherwise, ignore this
message, and you’ll be removed from our list.
    "
Just forget it if people don't want to confirm the email link. It probably means that they only want freebies.

    Thanks,
    John Keane

Why do people believe this widespread myth?

For a start, you can easily not give them the download link to the freebie until after they've confirmed their email address.

For me, it meant that they were inexperienced opters-in who simply didn't have the information/skills needed to subscribe effectively. When I switched from confirmed opt-in to single opt-in, I resolved the problem, gained about 25-30% more subscribers and a matching 25-30% more pro-rata income from them, too (so clearly not "only freebie-seekers").

The idea that people who've confirmed their email addresses at the time of their original opt-in are somehow more likely to open your emails and/or less likely to complain about spam in future, if you spam them, are complete Urban Myths of internet marketing.

I have found an increase in optima when I send them to a page right after opt in which outlines in pictures and words how they complete the opt in process like mentioned above. I also have made a mp3 audio of me explaining the process that auto plays on the page load. It seems to have increase optins as currently only about 10% of my optins aren't confirming.

People are 'clog out' with a lots of distractions nowadays, if you want to delivery something great, make sure you deliver to them almost immediately with 'single opt-in' rather than using 'double opt-in'. Statics show the response rate of 'double opt-in' is lower than 'single optin'.

    this is my 2cents
