I would get the cash first before transferring a domain name to someone else. Guess this doesn't help you right now...

I don't think there is anything you can do to recover your site, since you have already transferred ownership to him.

Consider this a lesson learned and next time either take full payment upfront before sending anything over to the client, or use Escrow.com or something similar to facilitate a smooth transaction.

It's too late now, but you should never transfer anything until full payment is received. You should also use escrow.com for any significant deals. Escrow protects both parties from fraud. There's little you can do if you already transferred everything.

This is very good advice. Keeping honest people honest, and avoiding those that aren't!

Do you still have your old site files? If so, I would hurry and put the site back up online. Then if the scammer complains, you could deal with his hosting service and explain what happened. They would see that the scammer's site came online at the same time you sold your site giving you some ammunition to say that you were never compensated for the sale and transfer.

If the scammer waits for awhile before putting up his "new" site, you will have proof that your site was up first and you could claim that he stole your files.

You have to make sure that you get payment first before transfer any details!

Well you lost the website. The thing you do always is first get the money and then send the site, because unlike money, the site can not be gotten back.

I agree with sbucciarel on using escrow. Troubles on flippa are many. Still, I did see a for only $10 a domain name. It was premium. Deals are still being made even now.

That actually applies if he were naming someone, which he isn't. He's relaying an experience and asking for advice and there aren't any rules against that.

Next time insist on payment being placed in escrow on escrow.com before you transfer anything ! That way you know that you will get paid!
