Where are the really good programmers hiding?

Ok, is it just me or is finding good quality programmers close to impossible?

I understand that quite a few great programmers prefer working on their own projects and ideas - which is fine.

But from the tons of different programmers I've hired over time, I'm yet to find one decent person. Either they don't get the specs (and the specs are in plain English btw) or they don't justify the prices they're charging.

And I've paid some crazy prices btw: upwards of $150 per hour in some cases. That might be totally justified for some of you here but you'd be appalled at the kind of work they've produced.

Is it just me having the flurry of bad programmers come at me from all directions, or is it something else? Where do you go to find a programmer? : (

Hey Sagar, why don't you try learning yourself? I mean it's always done best by doing it ourselves.

And again the good guys already have projects to complete. Not to mention the pros at every niche get booked up even before they want.

I can't imagine a real pro going out on these sites to try and find a job. Sometimes they might I guess but it's really rare.

  • Sagar,

If you are having bad luck with freelancers, perhaps you could try looking at an established business. If you are willing to pay 150 an hour then hiring an actual company may not be that much further from that price point.
    These guys are top notch,

    Hope that helps,

The really good ones work FULL TIME, and don't need another employer, because they are paid very well. Good part time programmers do exist but it does take experience in what to look for. I have been doing that very thing for 12 years, and have a great team, many part time.

The best programmers are in the SF Bay Area.

All the good programmers are already working on projects.

Trust me, if I find a good outsourcer then I do everything I can to keep them busy working on my projects. This means the guys who are sitting on those sites are the guys who are not booked up so naturally they are NOT the cream of the crop (in most situations).

go to open source platforms and see those who are adding pluggins for free.

Some great guys working in the joomla project for example. I contracted some over the years to do small jobs for me.

Look for people who did stuff similar to what you want. Thing is... there is no one fit for all with exceptions, so you want someone who already knows what you need.

My professor in college is a great programmer. My old boss at my IT job is a good programmer too.

They're all around. You may want to start on college campuses to find any programmers looking to earn $30 to eat Papa Johns instead of Ramen Noodles for dinner lol.

Some suggestions to find good programmers is to attend networking events, trade shows, meetups, etc, etc. More then likely if you attend enough of these you will make some useful contacts with exceptional programmers, or people that know exceptional programmers. Another suggestion is to ask for referrals.
