How important are niche site URLs?

How important is it to have a separate domain for each niche site? Is it a major faux pas to have a niche site in a subdirectory? Example, if your niche was vitamins and supplements, have your various niche sites at addresses like "vitaminsandsupplements.com/vitaminD", vitaminsandsupplements.com/antioxidants", etc etc.

I prefer to have a separate domain for each of my niche sites. Not only does this offer you the ability to host these on different hosting companies for additional link juice, but for only a few dollars a year you get your own unique URL.

In addition, they having different URL if you decide to sell one of your sites you can. Since a buy probably would probably pay you a lot less for site without it own unique URL.

However, I do have a select few of my niche sites pointing to a single URL. The reason I do this is because I want to promote the main URL. I know that with every promotion campaign, I'll pushing traffic back to my main URL.

Generally speaking, if the products are related then it's not a problem to create sub directories. If they are unrelated then go with the separate domain.
