where you can get a job working from home. Like you know being a transcriptionist . Where you actually work for a company that sends you paychecks.

Don't know of any legit work at home opportunities. The most successful work at home opportunities are those that you create yourself. If you have skills to sell, do a listing in Warriors for Hire or other freelance sites. If you can build a product to sell, the WSO forum is good for that.

Most work at home "opportunities" are just scams that bilk you out of your money, giving you little to nothing in return.

Those guys and ladies don't get paid. They volunteer their work kind of like a forum moderator.

        Lastly:

If you come across a website that promises you a work at home job for a fee, then you know right there and then that it is a scam. You should look into some sort of a home business that you can get started with online

          *Sigh...

Hilton Hotels hires people to take calls, from home, and pays them a salary, and benefits. (Can't get much more 'legit' than Hilton.)

Agora Marketing does as well (They used to be "Special Data Publishing" before they were bought out by Agora.) This is a 'telemarketing' job, but it is a 'job,' and it pays by the hour, and has full benefits...

Both of these companies have these opportunities locally to me, in Florida. I don't know about other areas and other companies....

          ***********************************************

Arise is another 'legitimate' avenue... legitimate as in you get paid an hourly amount for the hours you work... however, they're sort of a 'hybrid,' as Arise is a 'contracted' by larger companies like Apple, AT&T, Intuit and several others (these are 'clients') and then Arise 'subcontracts' the work out.... you must have your own corporation to subcontract from Arise, and you pay for training for each client, but once you are trained, you begin 'servicing,' the client, and you invoice Arise for your hours spent 'servicing,' and they pay the invoice.

There are a few other companies out there too... TeleFlora, WestAtHome, and Alpine Access that also offer legitimate work at home opportunities with hourly pay.

Your best place to find the 'legit' ones is on the WHAM boards.

          Hope that helps,

There are plenty of legit companies that hire work from home employees. You do not need to go thru an employment agency or look offline if you want online work. As I mentioned I have a book on legit work from home jobs at Amazon - I know the market.

You are partially correct. Some legit companies do require potential employees pay for a background check and fingerprinting.

Danielle is absolutely right. There ARE legitimate work-from-home JOBS. One of the most common types of jobs is as a call center agent, taking a company's customer service calls. This is exactly the type of job I currently have.

Many companies outsource this to a third-party company like Alpine Access, etc. These companies specialize in this type of work and will have several accounts from several different companies. The company I work for (Teleperformance.com) has several big-name company accounts: Google, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc. and has offices around the world. Not all of the company accounts allow at-home workers. In fact, most don't. It's entirely up to the client (Verizon, AT&T, etc.).

I do tech support for Verizon and work from home. I work full-time and have benefits. It is a regular JOB where I'm paid by the hour and receive a regular paycheck.

However, like most call-center jobs, the pay is low and the work itself (call-center work) is NOT pleasant. I also work a split shift: 9 AM - 1 PM and then 6 PM - 10 PM, which is probably the biggest factor in allowing us to work from home. I work nights, weekends AND holidays. (This year, I magically get Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's off but only because Tuesdays and Thursdays are my normal days off. Not so last year. Christmas morning, we were slammed because everyone was getting gadgets for Christmas and needed help to get them working.)

However, I have some physical (mobility) limitations and so for me, working from home is more important than a few extra dollars per hour.

My brother was accepted by Arise at one point and I believe they make you register as a corporation and pay you as an independent contractor. And you're only paid for actual talking time (in seconds). You're NOT paid for any time spent waiting for calls to come in.

The company I work for pays me by the hour, including any minutes spent waiting for a call to come in during my shift. Verizon pays THEM by the second ONLY. (Heaven only knows what Verizon is paying them per second to make up the difference so they can make a profit.)

I went through our local career center to find this company and had to jump through several hoops, even though I already had several years of call center experience. I had to go in for a group "interview" (orientation), then through a brief online aptitude test of some sort. Then one or two more interviews/tests/orientations, etc.

Initially, I was put on the AT&T account (NOT a work from home account, uggghh!), but then was switched to the Verizon account.

All of the interviews, testing and training were done in their offices. So yes, you have to be local. Well, I live in West Palm, but work out of the Ft. Lauderdale office, a full hour south of me. So I had to drive down there every day for 6 weeks of training before I could work from home.

Once that was done though, I went home and stayed there. I do have to periodically go into the office for performance coaching, update training, etc. But for the most part, I get to stay at home. (My supervisors are kind enough to take my physical limitations into consideration and limit their requests for me to come into the office.)

Companies are becoming more comfortable with telecommuting although even those positions require some face-to-face time, if only for the training period. These companies hire both directly and through employment agencies/career centers.

Prior to that, I did in-house call center work for my local electric company. However, I initially had to work in the office and only when I'd been promoted twice was I allowed to work from home. (I didn't even know they did that until I was hired and I learned it much later.) Of the 7 years I worked there, I worked full-time from home for 3 years. But I was still required to come into the office every 2-3 weeks or so, depending on if there was a meeting, if they needed to coach me, etc.

If you really want to work from home, call center jobs are probably the easiest, best jobs to look for. Even then, only a certain percentage allow working from home. But because of the sheer volume of customer service calls that need to be handled from companies all around the world, they're still easier to find than a lot of other work-from-home jobs.

I don't know where you're located, but try some of the companies Danielle and I have mentioned. Look for companies in your local area or within a reasonable driving distance. Even if you have to drive for 2 hours to get there, if it's only for training and periodically after that, it may be worth it to you.

If you've never done customer service, call-center type work though, be prepared. It's not particularly pleasant and is low-paying. But if you're working on something else, like going to school or building your own business, etc., they can be ideal for a time.

              Hope that helps!

I think they nearly all amount to a work-from-home business, myself, not a work-from-home job. The difference is between being employed and being self-employed. The OP is asking about employment, I think.

Whatever you do I would not look to any opportunity magazine for them. I fell for this years ago and wasted thousands of dollars chasing such opportunities. I have seen that the companies that offer true work from home jobs are usually those who only hire local people. There are even some books on Amazon about this.

If you are working for yourself, there are plenty of general transcription work out there to be had on O-Desk, Elance, and other freelance sites, you just have to put in a competitive bid.

If you are looking for a work at home opportunity with a company that is also paying you an hourly wage and benefits, well that's going to be hard to find. Not impossible, but you are going to have to put some time in scanning the web like everyone else. Anything that is advertised on this forum will quickly become saturated or full because there are so many looking for the same thing you are.

If you are a certified medical transcriptionist, you can make a little change working for major transcription companies if you have experience, but don't look for major rent paying cash. Type in your Google search medical transcription jobs and you will get what you need.

Do a search in Google using those keywords you are looking for in the hourly wage arena and take your time scanning, I'm willing to bet, you will find what you are searching for, but it's going to take some effort on your part to find what you are looking for. Use common sense as well. If a company is asking you to pay up front to apply for a job or see a job list, it's a scam. Job listings should be free.

Don't look for a particular "job" - look for companies that hire teleworkers. Unless you have special skills, most of the jobs will be customer service type with no benefits and fairly low pay. However, there are an increasing number of companies who offer such jobs and these can be a great source of extra income.

The pay is based on call volume or other measurable data.

I've noticed many WAHM sites feature lists of businesses that hire home workers so that might be a good place to start.

You should take a look at being a chat host or chat moderator.

There are so many gambling websites that need chat hosts these days it's crazy.

Some of them pay pretty good too, at least the ones in the UK.

People I know say it can get boring, but they get paid to chat crap all day long and have fun banning people. lol.

The best work at home opportunities are ones you create for yourself!

Create a product, provide a useful service, and market your your money pages accordingly.

Most work at home jobs for companies pay you with non-monetary compensation anyways.

I posted to this thread earlier, and for some reason my post was deleted! I can't remember exactly what I wrote now, but there are some good ideas posted by others in this thread.

That said, perhaps ODesk, ELance, Fiverr, or other work-for-hire sites might suit you, although you would be working essentially as an independent contractor, not an employee. You can also go to the Warriors for Hire section and offer your services there. I know there are some highly qualified people who do some great work that can be found in that forum.

Other than that, if you are willing to work for very low pay, you might consider being a VA (virtual assistant) for someone. Hope that helps...

The best way to earn money from work from home opportunities is to create your own. But if you are looking for stability then Textbroker is very good. You create articles and content for a whole range of reasons and get paid fairly quickly to be honest. I've used them as both an author and a client and I'm quite impressed

@ Nightengale, thanks for your thoughtful and detailed response Michelle. I believe this is a good answer to the question asked by the OP in post #1.

        Nightengale,
Yes, some of Arise's clients only pay on 'actual talk time,', ie, not paying you to sit there and wait for the calls (I believe that is mostly the Carnival Cruise Lines client), but most pay you by the hour.

Now, I don't want to get into a whole big thing about them (that's a 3,000 word article, but,) Arise has some very good points, and some very bad points, and it really comes down to how to each individual 'perceives' the 'weight' of each, individual good point and bad point.

Your brother might want to look at some of the other client opportunities.

If finding a job is all you want, then you should not have to pay anyone for that. As many others have said, there are many real world companies that hire online employees. You do NOT go to fiverr for this (what a suggestion!). You don't even have to work through odesk. Just look at job boards and places where traditional job listing are posted. Find the type of job you are looking for and apply. However, I must say that there is a real reason I left off from traditional employment (even online) and I agree with those who say that the best opportunities online are the ones you make for yourself. This is because you'll have no boss and unlimited income opportunity. When you are an internet marketer, you can constantly make more one month than you did the month before. It does take some training, but so does every other method of generating an income, both online and offline.

There are legitimate work at home jobs out there. I used to do medical transcription, but you need training for that one and it's an industry in transition due to electronic medical records. General transcription is a better choice if you aren't trained for medical. Pay is usually on production, not hourly, in my experience. You can earn a pretty good rate if you're an excellent transcriptionist, which is very different from being a good typist.

They do exist, but if there was a ratio of scams vs legit work from home opportunities.... i would say it's 99:1. Lol drastic huh? Well, it is what it is. You should learn how to "sell". If you hate the idea of owning your own website and driving traffic to it, then sell on ebay. All you gotta do is list, sell, then ship. Then repeat all over again.

They have a job board that lists companies looking to hire employees on a work from home setting. You have to register though. I think it costs $9 to have access to the job board but they have quality listings so it could be worth your bucks.

I would recommend heading over to Fiverr and looking at at the type of gigs that are on offer there. Make some notes around what you think you might be able to do, or able to do better, or slightly differently. I'll bet that you think of a ton of things that you could do or sell on Fiverr.

Once you've set up your gigs, set them up on some of the top Fiverr alternative sites for more exposure (just google "Fiverr alternatives") and set yourself up on the aforementioned freelance-type sites too.
