I don't go by what a site looks like. I view an authority site as one that gets traffic and backlinks naturally and can outrank a bunch of other sites just by making a post on the blog.

I would assume this site is a passion for you so I would continue and you can make some money from adsense etc.

First its on a webs subdomain , which means you have very little real control over the site. Second its not a authority , because in google it has a few backlinks and in google very few page results. Which means in my mind it is not a authority, maybe one day.

So my goal is to buy a domain for 'total control' and create lot more ocntent whilst doing lots of backlinking

The company that owns and controls "webs.com" will get the most benefit. They're just giving you the right to blog on a subdomain. They could terminate your account for no reason if they wanted to. Just buy a domain for like $10 a year, something that YOU own and control.

'Buying' a domain is just renting a name for a specified period, you don't permanently 'own' or control that name, ever. An authority site is any site that has established legitimate authority and natural backlinks, usually organized around a lot of topics, niches and total pages. Using a subdomain may impair the speed by which you establish authority and not be (relatively) as secure as a TLD, but that's a different issue than its standing as an authority site.
