Act now sales clock...good or bad idea?

So I wrote this code hooked up to some items I am selling on my website. This is similar to the "Buy in the next 20 minutes" things you see on the home shopping network with the intent to create a sense of urgency for purchasing my products.

The way it works, is that a "countdown clock" starts at 20:00 and counts live on the website. If the customer purchases within those 20 minutes, they will get the item for $100. If the time clock expires, than the page will reload and the item will have a price of $150. This stores a cookie in the computer of the user to still have the clock count down, even if they are off the page. Most potential customers will not be able to exploit this. Even if they do, they will buy anyway, which is a good thing.

1- I am wondering if I should package this and sell it. Does this sound like something that would be valuable?

2- If it is something you want, what price range do you see this being?

3- Would this be more valuable on wordpress?

Thanks for your time. Since this is my first post, I don't want to make it look like I'm trying to sell something. I just want to see if this is worth my time.

Thanks again,

Andrew

Why not just sell your product at the full price and tell people that if they don't act soon, the price will go up to 3x the amount. That's typically what I see with those common "belcher" style dashed line buttons that work well.

Of course your price is never really going up.. but it's a scare tactic at best and while a few select people know it's not really going to go up, the majority of new customers don't.

1 - What exactly are you selling again? I might have missed it in the initial read-through of your post but sure it's valuable. If it solves a problem that someone has, it's valuable to someone. Unless you're talking about selling the code?

2 - Price range is tricky. The majority of the replies you'll see here are probably common with the WSO standards which are $1, $3 and $7. The price that it's worth will ultimately be whatever people are willing to pay for it but start high and work your way down low. You never know how much people will pay for something until you try. Whenever I need to Craigslist something off, I start high and work my way low if it doesn't sell.

3 - A lot of people (if they haven't already) are using Wordpress as a CMS solution or using it for even static pages. It's just powerful software.. So it's hard to determine if it'd be more popular on Wordpress but you could try offering it as a paid plugin via Wordpress. However, I'm sure there are free plugins and codes available online that'll serve the same purpose.

Me personally, I wouldn't want a code that ACTUALLY raises the price. Part of that "urgent buy now" message is hoping that they'll actually buy it, because here's what I can see happening with functionality like that.

    *Price Goes Up 50%*

"Damn, should have bought it earlier..."

    *Leaves Page*

    Just my take on it.

This sounds like a pretty bad idea in all honesty. For one, they will obviously not buy after they see the price has gone up...

On something so expensive, the purchase will require a lot of thought by the buyer... and something like a countdown clock will make it look spammy and possibly turn the buyer away because you are pressuring them to make a quick purchase.

I have seen this approach in the past from one of my favorite maketers. It's look like this is a special offer for you only, then have a count down timer around 24- 48 hours. After the timing pass - you have to buy it at normal price.

I did not yet implement this for myself, so I don't know the conversion rate - but I think is it very good idea.

Back to you question, I don't think the countdown timer can increase the product value but it can create the Sence of Urgency. Your product have to have value of it own but if buyer buy it with in 24-48 hours, they will get the special deal which cannot find anywhere else. So, wp or price range, I have not seen any relevent to that.

I think you might let 24-48 hrs to buy (I think 20 mins is too short and you might lose potential customer). And you have to be honest to the offer - not like they can find this special deal again on the Google in the next few days.

I've already seen products available that do this exact thing.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of them.

Personally I don't like using fake scarcity like that though. If you want to use a time limit then it should be a set date and time and it should be sticked to. It shouldn't be a time limit that counts down for each user. Them are tricks that were being used 5 years ago -- I think (hope) people are wise to that stuff nowadays.

You won't know if it works or not from our opinions. The only way to know if it's a useful idea is to test it. Measure the results against the results of the same page that doesn't use the script. Then you'll know.

This is one of those things that could either work excellently or horribly. I could see this working if done properly. 20 minutes is to short, but maybe a day or two it could work.

I think this ploy is so common that people see through it.

    1. Go ahead and do so - if it's not successful, then move on. But if it is...
    2. $7 would seem fair, but you can actually start higher as someone here suggested.
    3. Definitely yes. If you were to offer it as a Wordpress plugin, it would be so much more valuable, as a lot of people are relying on Wordpress.

    Hope I helped.

Make it legit. If a product offer will expire in 48 hours, make sure the countdown doesn't start at 48 hours for every new prospect who visits your site. Once the 48 hours (or whatever) is up, close up the offer, and tell them that it's too late. If you fake it... you'll look like a clown.
