How to increase interaction with website visitors?

So, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on ways to do this. Or better yet, if you could share a link to an article on this, that would be great too.

With the exception of more established sites, I've seen in my research, that a website owner has loads of great content, but zero comments, etc.

What social media strategy could be used to create a more dynamic website? ex. Games, polls, etc.

What do you think? - I haven't had much success finding anything useful on this topic thus far.

And also, I just like the idea of being able to get feedback on the content that I will be putting out in the future; that way I will know what I can improve upon.

Games, polls etc. are good to engage people but still, if nobody knows about your site then these things don't help. Interestingly, I find comments are a lot harder to get then any other "free" response (like signing up for something).

Definitely build a list on the side of publishing great content, that way you can always broadcast a new email to let your subscribers know about a new article you just posted and ask them what they think about [XYZ] in order to hopefully get them to leave a comment.

Also, don't reply to spam comments...it's ridiculous what I've seen, especially when blog owners are so desperate that they approve these spam comments in order to reply to them.

I have also been thinking more creatively and eventually when I manage to find more people on board, I have a table that users can see what achievements have been made by other people that month.

I also done very well in the health and fitness niche when I done a Question of the week and wrote a full genuine and quality post on my customers question.

I have a authority blog that allows comments, but most of the comments I get are spam. I have added a "box" on the home page of the blog saying that I accept question and visitors just add their name, email and question and bingo it gets emailed to me. All very fast and no spam. For whatever reason this "box" works really well in getting my visitors to engage with me.

OK, thanks and good luck, Ed.

Drive more traffic. Really, the conversion rate for comments is much, much higher than anything else. Great content won't attract traffic by itself and I must have a damn good reason to comment on something.

Ok, I appreciate the responses so far.

So, from what I've read here, I have a short list of ideas that seem executable:

    1. Achievements board - this is a good one that I've certainly never thought about before. Question is, how would this work in practice; especially for business reasons?

    2. Question of the week - Can anyone expand on this idea as well, within the context of say using this strategy to get more customers?

    3. Question box - with name, email and question - Pretty self-explanatory, this one is.

    4. Live chat apps - What do you folks think of this one? Has anyone ever used this method to engage your website visitors before?

Well, that is all I have a this point. I'm looking forward to more responses.
