Wikihow brings the best answer for you here -

7 Tips on How to Get a Freelance Job - wikiHow

Besides that, my suggest is to remember the following things -
    1. Always try to share your knowledge.
    2. Join online and offline groups and stay active there.
    3. Market yourself and don't forget the local market also.
    4. Advertise as much as possible.
    5. Ask for referrals.
    6. Don't work for free.
    7. Share business card.
    8. Ask for work.
    9. Be ultra-polite and never stop trying.

I did a lot of work when it was vworker but now freelancer has bought them out, the site is lousy. I have managed to score one job but most are badly paid and too many bidders undercutting.

    Tips ???

Well, keep bidding for projects which you think you can do. It will take time if you are new till you get your first gig. Show your skills, perform, get paid.

Repeat the process, build up your profile..

DO NOT OVERHYPE YOUR PROFILE WITH FAKE PORTFOLIO

A lot of people think ( and someone suggested up there also ) that over-hyping your portfolio will get you projects faster are absolutely wrong.

When I started working for freelancer, I had 0 portfolio, and today I have more than 200 or 300

Freelancer is not exactly a great place to begin. Elance is relatively better. The thing about winning your first project is to be perseverant. Present the best of your capabilities in "About me" section and provide the reason why a buyer should consider your bid. It does take some time normally to win the first project, once you have that non-zero number on your profile, it becomes relatively easier.

      Hi guyz,

Thankyou so much for sharing. I have been working in Fiverr, and I thought of beginning in Freelancer as well. What you guys have shared has helped me understand how to begin offering my services in Freelancer. I am gonna pull up some of my works from Fiverr put them as work samples in Freelancer. I guess that should do. I am also gonna write an 'About Me' section that is short but precise. Thankyou again for sharing.

As someone who sometimes hire a freelancer, here are some advices :

->Answer a job offer with a detailed description of what you can do and how you plan to do it. You want to give enough details to demonstrate that you have knowledge and skills on the subject but not too much so that the client has to pay for the completion of the task.

->Do not take a job offer if you are not sure that you can finish it, because once you will have a bad rating it will be difficult to get others jobs.
Provide help only for the tasks and subjects where you have knowledge, skills, experience. Stay focused and take the time to learn and improve your skills.

->Do not be cheap, be fair, i care about the cost of your services but i care more about the completion of the task, so i prefer to pay you more than to have slow and bad results.

->Craft a good presentation of yourself, i don't care about your photo, but i care about the knowledge you have, the skills you have, the experience (finished projects) you have. Even if you have not completed one job on the outsourcing platform you can do the tests they provide on the platform and you can upload a description and photos about the others projects you have done in the past.

->Do not hesitate to ask questions in order to have a clear idea with detailed specifications of what the client wants, else you will waste your time and complete a useless work.

->Answer your messages regularly, at least once a day.

      Ok good luck to you.
