Using A Pen Name Legally

Disclaimer: I'm not sure whether or not this is the appropriate place to ask this question. If it isn't, I meant no harm.

I'm thinking of creating a pen name to do business under. Not for any fraudulent purposes, but out of privacy concerns. I know there's really no legal issue w/ using a pen name in general for authoring works, well, except trademarking the name. But my concern is more so about signing legal and business documents (including registering entities) under a pseudonym.

My buddies that deal in business law are away for vacation so I can't ask them, LOL. I know this isn't a legal forum, but I'm hoping that someone can at least point me in the right direction.

    This is as good a section as any, but this is another one of those questions that have already been discussed to death. Using the forum's search function, I found 84 threads that have the phrase "pen name" in the thread title. I'd advise browsing a few of those threads and you'll probably have more info than you want or need on the subject.

      When I registered an offline business with my then-county of residence, all they required me to do was file a DBA (Doing Business As) form.

      I then signed papers "John Doe dba John Buck"...

      You might want to wait until your legal buddies get back from vacation to see what the implications of doing this online are...

    I don't live in the US, so I can't tell you if it is or not legal in your country. However, I know that many marketers use pen names... some well-known marketers... and most of them are US residents. So, I think it's not a problem, but, as I said, I have to way to tell if it's legal or not.
