What's your biggest fear in IM?

hi everyone,

i´m working on a post right now which keep me awake at night. unfortunately, with the freedom of being self-employed there is also the worry that we don't make enough money at the end of the month. so sometimes I just wake up and can't get back to sleep because I worry to death.
Sure most of the things sort itself and i worry about nothing but often i feel that it is nice to have a plan at hand when things go wrong.

what about you? if you are self-employed on the internet and if that is your only source of income - what do you worry about?

or maybe it´s just me?

would love to share thoughts on this.

thanks in advance

My biggest fear is stagnating. I don't want to get stuck in an invisible prison of excuses, justifications, and blame finding. Thankfully, I have discovered that the key is TAKING OWNERSHIP OF MY LIFE. There are no excuses. No people to blame. No one to point the finger at. I take full ownership.

So far, it's working out. I blog and also do professional writing. My output used to be only 2000 words per day. Today I just hit the 12500+ level. Plus I feel more creative and innovative than ever! It's all about TAKING OWNERSHIP. I tell you, it HURT to admit to myself that the way I was doing things in the past was ineffective. Once you get over the hurt ego, things start opening up. I have also started mapping out my strategy and given myself daily targets. So far so good.

As the saying goes: If you're not moving forward, you're dying.

Thanks, Monja. One of the reasons I go to WarriorForum is for reassurance and moral support. I read the encouraging stories here as well as the success testimonials and they help push me forward toward my goals. It's a great way to get an emotional boost. Let's face it-IM can be quite a lonely journey sometimes. By connecting with a community, we can get the reassurance that we're not alone and that others are facing the same opportunities and challenges we are.

Seriously though - worrying is a waste of time and energy.

Most bad things you worry about don't happen - therefore the worrying was a waste of time and destraction.

Even if the bad things do happen - worrying does not help and in fact means that you are not in control of all of your resources to deal with the problem - which is only bad.

So - stop worrying. What will be - will be.

They say you get what you think about - if your head is full of negative things - you may actually be attracting them to you and that's the last thing you want.

The only way out of the problem is to train yourself to let those negative thoughts fly straight out of your head when they come up and practice stopping them in the first place.

        Practice.

Before I go to bed I have a routine where I relax and think about the next day and what I want to achieve, then I program my mind to work on how to get the best day completed so it works on that while I sleep, and I program what I want to see and think when I wake up.

So - I don't need to consciously think about things and have a busy mind when I'm trying to sleep.

I just go to sleep and then when I wake up (always before my alarm) I immediately sit up in bed and my program kicks in and reminds me what my day will be like and what I want to get done that day.

I don't waste any of my conscious time worrying about things I don't control.

I am self-employed and earlier into the online venture, I would wake up in the middle of the night after having nightmares of going back to my 9-6 job. Then like you, I couldn't get back to sleep and try to do some planning or work to keep my thoughts calm.

I believe it could have been the stress I gave myself for trying to make as much as my previous employment earnings in a short period of time.

After 6 months, it got better .. I stop having nightmares.

Well, as I had been a total SEO dude for quite a long time, my biggest fear always was that what will happen if Google rolls out another devastating SE algorithm update. Because if it does happens I am doomed. Worries are always there no matter what. So you should focus on gaining more control over your life (stop depending too much on someone or something), and always diversify your sources of income to have a happy night time.

    Takeaways:

    * Dont put all your eggs in one basket (or depend hugely on one thing).

    * When you are worried, it means you are unsure about the reliability of your business (or anything else, in general).

i agree with you. at least that is what i would tell others, thing is to stick to it when you wake up ;-)

before i had my online business i was self-employed as well and i know it was similar in the first two years, i know it and still i worry.
guess i simply should stop ;-)

i diversify a lot and try to experiment especially since i put together advices for other people.

      thank you for your advice!

  • My greatest fear is meeting failures and disappointments. Although it happens to everyone in the world, inside or outside the world of Internet Marketing, I am still too scared to face failures, not because I am rocketing high, but because my pessimistic approaches might kick in when I fail. I have to adjust my attitude in order to overcome this nasty fear.

andy, that´s a good tip, guess i´ll try that. recently i got a calendar so i plan a week ahead and once i´m done for the day i feel i got a step further and things accomplished. without that tool i could work all day and night and don't feel i got anything really done. now, writing it down, really helps.

If you worry too much, you've no time for taking action.

It's so easy to worry about something that you cannot control like getting hit by another algorithm update. Also, a lot of marketers worry about things they can control like how much traffic they drive to their websites.

Forget about worrying. Before I worry about not making money, I work on developing a new special offer, testing different price points, and driving more traffic.

Worry is not a business asset, it is a handicap. It's already hard enough to make money online (at least for most folks) that you should waste your energy on self-destructive thoughts.

I'm not qualified to post on this topic because I still have a 9-5 job. But I worry about the day I get too serious about IM and go full time : ). I love my day job but the money in IM is tempting. I hope I can keep it in perspective until I'm ready to move another direction.

I hear ya. Here are just some diagnostic questions that come to mind. They might help you get better results.

Do you study your traffic stats to see where you're getting traffic from?

Do you sort your traffic sources in terms of page views and clicks (if possible)?

Do you pay attention to which of your subpages get visited the most?

Do you study your bounce rate?

If you keep a list, do you change up your messaging and linking strategy to see if it improves your CTR?

The internet is not going to disappear. People won't stop buying stuff online (on the contrary, people are buying more and more online day after day). So we don't have reasons to have major fears. The only problem is that things change fast on the internet, and the campaigns that are profitable today may be not profitable tomorrow. So, it can be hard to have a "consistent" income, we can make 20K this month and just 10K in the next month.

For this reason, I believe that any IMer needs to be careful spending the money that they make online, because the only way we have to maintain a good standard of living is by controlling our money very well and knowing exactly how much we can spend and how much we have to save when we have very profitable months.

great advice, william, although it think that every entrepreneur has to face that...we all need to be careful how much we reinvest. but the point is to get over the "enough to live" factor. so if i need 2000$ per month to live comfortably and make 20K i can save a lot for the coming months. but what if, month after month, i just make 1500$ and need to add some more from my savings to maintain my lifestyle?
you can say that you then just need to make more... yeah... but don't we all want that? i guess if we have a bad month it´s not that we did not want to make enough money...

I always looking for new internet marketing ways to explore my business to go viral .
What I fear about is whatever campaign that I did, do not get the result as estimate after wasting much time and money on that.
For personal , I believe it a big fear because it just going to make my money gone for nothing and is hard to bring that huge money for next marketing campaign .

My "fear" was that Google was going to really get hit by an antitrust issue... thus potentially really hurting my income. I'm no fan of Google, per se, but I've learned to play the game with them and obtain great results.

Anyway, they just came to an agreement with the government where they made a few simple concessions and all is well with them, for now... but, that was my biggest fear !!!

You can manage your fear by listing down the factors you can control and working from there. Most campaigns are works in progress. They are not strictly 'set it and forget it' activities. The ones that make money make money because they are constantly tweaked and factor in past results. Don't expect to hit the ball out of the park on your first swing. Everyone has to pay their dues first, right?

That's a reasonable fear. There is enough money to be made on different web niche verticals. But I don't think these companies are that scalable since there are so many niches out there.

@Monja - You have to find a way to increase your means, so it's all about expansion as oppose to shrinkage. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to turn into a shopaholic or live beyond your means, but to leverage what is already working for you and focusing your efforts on the things that are already giving you the best return. It's about identifying areas where you are not making best use of your time and becoming more productive. So in summary:

    1) Leverage what is already working for you.
    2) Don't spend time on activities that aren't giving you good results.
    3) Be more productive in the time that you have.

Also and it's an important one, look at areas where you are spending money that you can either find better deals or stop using them altogether. This will increase your means.

'Worry' can be a debilitating thing in anyone's life. If you allow it to infiltrate your psyche it can have a knock-on effect upon your health and your self-esteem. Far better to focus and work in the "wonder of now" to get the results you are looking for. When Donald Trump was a billion dollars in debt, the last thing he did was sit around and worry, because that wasn't going to change his situation.

If you find yourself in 'drawdown' mode every month you need to decrease discretionary spending, cut out unnecessary distractions, identify the most profitable activities in your business and FOCUS like a WARRIOR
