Most marketers don't make any money identifying a niche and creating a site around it either. Before starting anything I suggest you do some real market research into your potential niches and see if there is any demand before starting a site or blog. Better to do a few days of research to see if your idea has potential and test it before creating a random blog or site and waiting for months for funds to come in.

Most of the "sites that people create about it" are blogs.

    These aren't two different things.

It's not measurable, and nobody knows; but if it's true of 95% of bloggers, then it's probably true of 95% of non-bloggers as well ... so whether it's true or not, it doesn't signify anything helpful anyway, or to put it another way, it isn't worth worrying about.

Before you start a blog, you need to do research. The first step is considering what niche market you want to go into (dating, video games, weight loss, fashion). The market you choose should not only be profitable but one that you like and know a something about (makes it easier to connect with your audience, write content and what not). You should also have an idea of the products you want to promote and so on. Research is the most important aspect of a successful blog.

    Good luck,

Great advice given. Do your research. Don't think about monetizing until you see good traffic. Watch the social network. You have to build something cool before people will come. When they come you can then make some money.

Blogging potently is just another way to drive traffic to your website and create a fan base. People weather they build a blog, or build a website around a niche - will make 90% of their income from their email list.

    Really good advice above.

    My $0.02...

    1. It was said above by one of the replies, many niche sites are actually WP based blogs, it's not really an either or.

    2. Spend time researching a potential niche before setting anything up. You're going to be spending a lot of time and effort building the site, marketing it - makes sense to dig a little deeper and find the answers to questions like, "what are the highest affiliate commissions/CPAs possible", "is there scope for recurring income?"

I notice a lot of people who just start trying to earn money online seem to veer towards the "make money" and "IM" type niches. Very saturated, very competitive. Compare that to say Medical Tourism - where it's possible to earn 1k plus per sale, in an industry that's growing globally at 35%pa and that isn't over saturated...

Why not both? Make a static site and then add a blog to it with pages. Keep writing, and in fact treat each blog post as an article marketing entry (and do the needful). That way you will gain both in terms of SEO as well as article marketing, end eventually emerge as an authority in your niche(s).

About 90% of business start-ups fail if I am not mistaken, so why are you expecting it to be different for bloggers?

If you think that there is some easy niche to make money, then it's probably a niche you will need to create. This is possible too and has plenty of advantages.

  • Play with your strengths. As for myself, I like taking risks, so if I were to reach that decision, i'd go identify my own niche and work around it. If your passion is gaming, then identify your desired course of action - Do you like playing it (YouTube Let's Plays) or do you prefer writing articles about it? (Gaming blog/forum)

I agree with most of what's been said here.

Blogging and identifying a niche that you create a site around are pretty much the same thing.

Did you know that 52.3% of all statistics are BS and made up on the spot? (I just made that up.)

In all seriousness, do your research and go down the path of blogging about something you are passionate about.

It's really hard to keep on adding original content to a website that you have no real passion for.

And don't even try to monetize for a while. I usually give it 30 posts or 30 days, whichever is greater. That's probably being overly conservative, but it's a rule of thumb that has served me well.
