Is it okay to copy other sites photos for our blog?

Like for example you want to make an article, a tutorial or a product review for the game Halo or Red Alert or Even Mario Bros or a vitamins product..

If you copy some of their photos in the internet, do you always get a problem with it? I mean don't they contact you to tell you that it's copy right or some sort?

If yes, do you always get someone to take or create photos that you can use.

I have a site for a game and it's text heavy. I think it's time for me to put some photos in it. Thus this thread.

It's illegal to use images without licensing them. But I think the worst you can get is an email to remove the picture, you will then have to remove the them.

If it is a product review then normally they will supply pictures to you, yes taking others art work is illegal and you do need their premission to use their work. There are absolutely 100's of free stock photo sites out there so you shouldn't have problems find images.

Just a few for you after a quick google search...

I know you're trying to help, but that's a very dangerous assumption. Depending on the situation and severity of the offense, and how aggressive the infringed upon party wants to be, intellectual property theft can result in years in prison and fines of 6-figures or more.

You might want to read this:

The real cost of being sued by Getty | Copyright Action

The £1,951 equates to $3152 in US dollars. Their total legal cost to get that settlement was over $38,000.

Getty Images pays a company to scour the web looking for images on unlicensed sites. This is serious business.

Other people's pictures and content is automatically protected when they create it - they do not need to make any special statement in order to protect it. If you use their images without their permission - that's stealing and it's illegal.

      ^ Correct ^

      Jensha... go to Google...

Type in "copyleft images" or "copyright free images" or "royalty free images" or "creative commons images" and see what comes up.

Just make sure you read very carefully any licensing conditions how these images can be used.

The last thing you want is to inadvertently use a photograph for example from Getty Images who are very quick to spot anyone stealing any of their images.

In fact, for many years now they've used a piece of software initially developed by the Israeli military to track images as they're used across the Internet.

They can instantly see who is using their images without their permission and whereabouts these images are being used.

If memory serves me correctly, it's called PicScout.

Steal one of their images and you can almost certainly expect a large demand for payment from them. It's happened to many other people before so you've got to be exceptionally careful.

    I see.
    Thank you all.
The thing is I currently have a Wordpress site that is about the web browser game Evony.
I want to copy paste their logo for one and put it in my header as a design.
And not just their logo but you get the point.
I saw a lot of other sites like it that have the same pictures from them.
And some sites about Warcraft's DOTA.
But when I was about to do it, I thought of asking you guys about it.
I guess I have to figure out something else.
Maybe they bought it from them that's why they're able to use it freely.

I think you can easily get logo and images for your site simply by asking the makers of Evony and DOTA. It's free advertising for them and these companies usually have stock photos for promotions. I think that's probably why those other sites have the same photos.

It's perfectly ok to steal a company's logo and other people's photos. Just make sure you have plenty of money in your bank account for lawsuits.

  • You should not copy images from other blogs without giving credits to them. I mean, getting photos without permission is a big no-no. Do not do that, because it might cause some serious things in the future especially when the original owner of the photos knew about that.

Giving credit is not sufficient. Getting permission or buying a license is the only option unless you find royalty free images.

Yeah well. Everyday I see a lot of people posting pictures of 9gag and other sites to their facebook pages, blogs and etc. That's why I have this thought that it's okay or so I thought.

Just a note: I'd be very careful about using trademarked logos from the company. They aren't royalty free by any definition. The best thing to do is go to the site and check their links to see their terms ... sometimes they have a section that tells people how and where their logos can be used.

If they don't have one, shoot an email and ask. Putting their logo in your header is a bad idea. It makes it look like you're trading off of their logo.

It gets obvious after reading forums that some people do not even read the OP. They read the topic title, and then hit the reply button. Reading seems to be hard work after all.

One of the most stupid posts I've seen lately and a great example of why asking legal questions on forums is generally a poor idea.

Please do NOT go looking for 'royalty free' images. Royalty free does NOT (necessarily)mean free to use. In general it means that after paying an initial fee you have free use of an image (according to whatever license is in place) without further per-use payments.

You DO still usually have to pay an initial fee to use the image in the first place.

Here's something people need to think about ... it's nice to try to help others, it's what makes this forum work ... BUT, you're not helping others by giving them bad advice.

We really shouldn't be guessing at the advice we give. Talk about what we know instead. You'll save face, others will get the help they need, and there will be less confusion.

This website will always be as good, or as bad, as the members make it.

yes and no, if the users or owners of the pictures allow you to use their pictures you have to put alink to the original image page, if it is a printed screen for a game, it's bad seen but you can copy a image from a page with no copy rights, but don't do it people don't trust that people,
    All the best.

You can use Games pictures you will never get any kind of DMCA because you are promoting their product for free but if is some kind of art work painting that has some copy rights you must give backlink iin credit to the source its reduces the chances of disclaimer

That's not always the case... you can look for attributable photos to use like freedigitalphotos.net. But as a publisher, you need to take your responsibility, if you are using photos that are not yours, read the copyright notice.... if they allow it for your blogs with credits to them, never forget to publish credits to them or otherwise you will face some nice problem in the future...

If you shoot some photos and then the whole internet would start benefiting from them, without giving you any credits, would you think it's ok? No, it's not okay to use photos you don't own. The least thing you can do is ask for the owner's permission before using his/her work.

Sounds like you know it's not right. You want to know what happens if you get called out on it. You want reassurance that if caught you will have a chance to backtrack without consequences.

Using copyrighted images without permission is more likely to result in a very large invoice sent to you for "use of image". It can be a painful lesson so be careful and get permission or purchase rights to images.

Be wary of Creative Commons Licensed images you find on Flickr. Anyone can open a Flickr account. Anyone can upload images that they don't own as creative commons. Flickr won't help you if Getty Images come calling, as Flickr will claim it's a violation of their TOS and close the offending account. That's the end of their legal remit.

To get an idea of the problem try Googling "Getty Letter". It make me feel sick to the stomach when people brag about the cover designs they've had made on Fiverr. These more often than not include licensed stock photography and fonts where commercial use in not permitted. So for $5 you get the pleasure of sitting on a ticking license time bomb...
