Recommendations wtd for truly excellent & experienced WordPress web hosts?

I'm looking for a really truly great wp host with experience in supporting wordpress issues, and definitely one criteria is that it has fast servers that are not overloaded (esp. mysql).

Please no 'hostgator' suggestions.

Not looking for cheapest, just the 'cream of the crop.'

    WordPress is so much standard and has so little issues that you can take any host.

    No, seriously, you can host WordPress on almost any Linux server and there is usually no need for any custom maintenance or tweaks.

    mysql being overloaded, slowing my sites to a crawl, is what drove me to eventually just spend the money and get my own vps.. depending how technical you are (or if you're ok with outsourcing some set-up), you might want to consider it.

        yeah.. but I don't know if I would go that route (cheapest), as those folks come and go every few months it seems. I use cloud servers at rackspace - a Linux cloud server there starts as low $16/month. The down side - you pay for you outbound "bandwidth" (18cents per gb).

        If you get an unmanaged VPS the cost is a lot less.

    I'm not convinced by any of the hosts that claim to be specially optimized for WordPress or any other CMS for that matter. Rochen.com claims to be, I don't buy it, but it is generally thought of as a fairly good host.

    MediaLayer is a great one if price is not problem. MDDHosting is also good.

    How about Hostgator?

    No, seriously, I use my dedicated Hostgator server for some pretty large Wordpress sites and I never have any issues.

    The idea is to move those tasks that put a strain on your resources, off your server. So for example all of my images, videos, etc are all hosted on external CDN networks such as Amazon S3. Then all of my emails that are sent via the Wordpress install (new member emails, comment notifications, etc) are all done through an external SMTP service rather than through my own server.

    By moving these resource hogging tasks off your own server, it leaves more than enough resources for your Wordpress site to run nice and fast.
