Apples and Oranges . . . Your Window To The World

Christmas is almost upon us yet again and it seems the older we get the quicker the years fly by.

The 1940's was a devastating period in history with WWII creating havoc and hardship for all. The 1950's and early 1960's were equally tough times and was the period of my childhood.

Luxury goods were not only hard to get, they were the stuff of dreams for most. Christmas for my younger siblings and I was always made enjoyable with the love of my parents and relatives but we were lucky if the sum total of our gifts included more than a stocking apiece hung from the mantelpiece, and crammed full with goodies such as an apple, orange, assorted hard nuts, a few sweets or small selection box of chocolate bars, and maybe a dinky toy. In latter years we would be excited to find a separate 'main' present such as a jigsaw puzzle, small train set, or an action man (doll, in the case of my sister).

Although very harsh those early years of my childhood were some of the fondest and happiest times I recall. Who would have thought that an apple, an orange, and some nuts could bring such a beaming smile to a young child's face.

Fast forward to the present day and children still have an apple and an orange at Christmas, but it's an Apple computer or tablet, and an Orange mobile phone that cost hundreds.

What's the point of this recollection?

Could you ever imagine a humble eating apple or large juicy orange inspiring or enabling you - as a child - to achieve business success? Back in those days there were no computers, no internet, and old fashioned public payphones were the order of the day for most. Yet, incredibly, some came through those hard times to achieve global business success, whilst many more tasted it on a lesser level.

Today's budding entrepreneurs have grown up in the age of the computer and internet, in the age of the mobile/smart phone, and in the age of unlimited opportunity. In other words it's handed to them on a plate, yet many seem oblivious of this.

In an instant you can contact the four corners of the world either verbally by phone, or electronically online. With only the knowledge of a product or service that you have taken the time to acquire, you can have a website, email, blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, forums, and a thousand other ways of telling the whole world what you have to offer. All in an instant. At no other time in history has there been such a vast array of invaluable tools at the disposal of all, enabling anyone to reach out to a truly global marketplace.

So when I hear so many people today complaining that they can't do this and can't do that, a wry smile creeps over my face. I had an apple and an orange that tasted lovely but were soon gone. You have an Apple and an Orange that are your window to the world, and $$$$'s.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and a prosperous 2013.

That is a situation Mr. Devil, apples and oranges can help us to make money today.

You have a merry christmas too.

You say we complain about what we can't do. Do you think it is because we think that the standards are too high, or are we lazy, or is low self esteem getting us, what in your opinion is it?

Standards too high? Lazy? Low self esteem?

ANYONE can now set up a website or blog, and subsequently a business, which was not the case in decades past. As for being lazy, that's self inflicted. Low self esteem will only be cured by kicking yourself up the backside into action.

. . . is what you should be grateful for. A golden opportunity that previous generations never had.

How true. I would love to teach my nephew and pass on some of my self-proclaimed wisdom to him, but he's more interested in riding a dirt bike on his Xbox. Maybe one day he'll be 'ready', when he's in a job he hates. Maybe

Let him have the time of his life man. If he's just a teen then probably girls and grugs will interest him more. But anyway, after teenage or close to that (like 16 -18) he might get interested in online marketing stuff. You should inspire him when the time comes and hopefully he will get a hold of the online business world :-)

This is so true. Can't just agree more. The advances in technology have opened 100's of thousands of gates for us all, for anything we want to do. Merry Christmas, by the way.

I think we are prone to being lazy and I also think the reason why we get lazy is because we just don't have a plan of action in mind!

I don't have an Orange or an Apple....by the way!

      Very true and wise words.

I think youngsters today simply take all the technology they are surrounded with (and are extremely fortunate to have) for granted. If they were to experience only a fleeting taste of those tough days of yesteryear, then perhaps they'd truly appreciate the good fortune and opportunity of today that's right under their nose(s). Have a great holiday.

I think you are mistaken to say it is the "youngsters" of today that are the ones who are taking technology for granted. Sure some of them are but not all of them.

I know tons and tons of "older" folks I would guess from you day and age who have experienced the "tough days of yesteryear" as you so put it, and they are also doing nothing with their lives, and taking technology for granted.

Not only that but your posts implies that nowadays things are easy and the tough days were only when your generation was younger. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Each generation has their own challenges to go through, and is not always understood by the generation before them or after them.

My point is instead of focusing on the generation when someone grew up, focus on whether or not that person is actually doing something with the tools available to them.

@kayfrank - Well I recommend "Pink Lady" apples, they are particularly crunchy and refreshing ;-)

@Broyde - On the contrary, I don't think the standards are too high at all. If you go the extra mile in any pursuit you will always stand out. Most people set their standards far too low and I don't think competition is anything to be afraid of.
