Any new "review" sites survive 2012?

I started about 7 sites in 2012.

All of my sites that focused on amazon "reviews" eventually tanked.
They were all under 15 pages, and only had review articles on them, and related images, tech specs.

From what I've clued together, google seems to be doing a lot more manual reviews on new & low content sites. The more aged your site is, the less likely it is to be hit.

I'm not convinced Panda is behind this.

My theory is that new low content sites that only focus on reviews and are not "authority" sites were likely hit.

Some traits of a few of my sites that survived:

They explicitly states the site was new and to expect more content soon.

They were naturally sounding EMD's. For example: HowToBuyAVacuum and not BestPriceVacuum.

The articles were never just "review" articles with content link to amazon. The articles were just on subject and never linked out to affiliates.

The manual parameters Google uses were leaked a few years back. Back then, some people thought it was a hoax. Considering Panda's behavior, it is increasingly becoming clear that the guidelines for manual review might be the real deal.

Regardless, the bottom line is: build real sites that provide real value. Thin sites that act as mere traffic magnets to upsell to affiliate programs will continue to face a hard time in the future.

Look at high-value sites in your category and figure out what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. Build on their strengths and fix their flaws.

There has been a manual aspect to getting ranked for a long while. Low-quality EMD sites were also targeted in the latest Google update. The search engines prefer larger sites that provide value to the end user.

I recommend finding a profitable niche that you like and know a little about, so that you will stick with it and one that will grow over time. Also, use a broader domain name that's related to your niche. I personally think those EMD domains look tacky, anyway.

What sort of backlinking did you do for your 7 sites which evenually tanked, if any?

      All 7 sites didnt tank.

For one that did, I used Sick Submitter but was extremely careful with it IMO. When it tanking I then used a WSO for backlinking after my site was hit. It was a desperate reaction. The WSO cost around $40-$50, can't recall exactly but it didn't help it.

The rest I did no paid or automatic backlinking. The other ones that were hit, were simply from on-page seo/lack of content.
