What is the difference between
1) Getting a dedicated ip for my shared hosting account
2) Getting a vps hosting
Also what are the similarities between them?

Thanks

vps hosting is better for speed in my opinion and another ip for your shared acc, it really depends on what you are going to use it!

The similarity is that you have your own unique IP that you can use that IP address for register SSL Certificates or do more thing that require unique IP.

The differentiation is, if you use Sharing Hosting, your site still have mixed/shared resources with other hundred or thousand sites on one server. Therefore, you can't set up your own module or root access to the server.

If you are on the VPS, you are more independent in you own vitual server. You'll have freedom to go into your root folder to setup module and more. You'll have own resources such as Bandwidth, Storage Space, Ram, or CPU in the higher rank VPS.

    That's just some small point!

A VPS will give you root access to a virtual "container/machine". In some cases, it may not be more powerful than shared hosting.

The main reasons for using a VPS is isolation & root access.

In many cases a VPS container account is not going to be as beefy as a shared account. Although on a shared account you are all using the same allotment of resources. Whereas on a VPS container you have your own allotment.

With a VPS you will most likely have 1 possibly 2 dedicated ip addresses anyway. You need those if your nameservers are pointed to that box and you are running BIND.

You can use one of those IP addresses as the default address. If you host multiple sites, they will take on that IP address.

You can still assign the other one to its own site...dedicated...so that you can set up a purchased SSL certificate. An SSL certificate install is going to require a dedicated IP for the domain it is registered to.

Which leads to the next point. If you are going to run an eCommerce environment on that domain, another reason a VPS or Dedicated server is going to be required, is because of your daily vulnerability scans for your PCI compliance.

Your scan vendor will report back with things that need to be tweaked, plugged, turned on and turned off. You won't have that luxury on a shared server. But with root access to a box or container, you can make most of those changes as needed.

VPS is better in many ways.
And you may start from marblehost VPS deals which are not pricey but reliable and stable.

VPS is NOT always better than shared hosting, especially with non-techie guys. Unmanaged VPS will require server management skills. Fully managed VPS will be much more expensive than shared hosting account.

Low-end VPS is not performing as well as shared hosting, especially when comparing with cluster servers.

For IP question, if you just need a dedicated IP and your site is still working well on shared hosting environment, stay there and request a dedicated IP from your hosting vendor. Don't need to upgrade to VPS yet.
