A friend of mine has a WSO running at the moment for a product called "eBook Cover Maker Pro", and I had the privilege of testing it near the end of its development.

Very easy to use and gives some great results if you use your imagination and follow some simple design rules.

I'm a bit of a control freak, so I have a hard time trusting to places like Fiverr or oDesk. I'd been making my covers with Photoshop Elements, as well as Pixlr. I've even tried to make Xheader work. My friend's product is simple, elegant and easy to learn.

An ebook cover can cost you as low as a couple of bucks to as much as couple thousand. So its all up to you. But practiaclly speaking, if you can afford like a couple hundred then you can get some really great covers to pick the best one from. I am talking about running a conest over graphic design sites. You run a contest. Designers design a unique cover for you. You get an average of like 20-40 participants which 20-40 covers to choose the best one for your book. And you pay the winner. Thats a great way.

Otherwise you can look into sites like odesk, elance and off course fiverr.

Whatever software or service you use, make sure you have the right to use the image and that the quality is high. Anything on Fiverr I buy a licence to the image and send that for the service provider to use.

There are many options for you to find professional that can design your ebook cover. You may start here Warriors For Hire

Two options that you can do are to:

    1) Find the cover design that you like or something that looks like what you're going for and have a Warrior here design it for you using that as inspiration.

    2) Follow the sames steps as above, only use an odesk or some other contractor. Warriors will probably be more reputable and give a better quality result though

Sorry but slightly off topic. Due to the huge amount of mentions of KINDLE here at WF, I am curious about it. Anyone have any links to DEFINITIVE Kindle threads here on WF? Preferably something that covers everything from getting started to promoting?

I bought Joshua Kwentoh's Kindle Cover Design Kit and use it all the time. I think he's still selling it as a WSO here. I've also just used Gimp/Inkscape (both free) to create covers since I don't have Photoshop and those have turned out really good - sometimes better than the one's I've paid for or used a template.

    Fiverr if you want to go cheap;

99designs.com if you want to run a contest that will get you a bunch of different covers to choose from and will still be pretty cheap

One thing about contests, though... If you go that route, I **highly** recommend using not only your own judgement to pick the winner, but as many other people (who ideally will be of the same demographic as your potential customers) as you can. "You are not your customer."

If you do opt to outsource, make sure you have full rights to any photos used.

I love making my own covers. Gives complete control and I can easily change them if needed.

What ever you do, don't use fiverr, too many people use copyrighted images there. Look around this forum and pay a little extra, it will help you gain sales. There are many talented graphic artist here on the WF, I am not one of them...

Using copyrighted images is not a problem which is confined to a few unscrupulous sellers on Fiverr and is something which you will come across everywhere - including right here on this forum!

If you have the tools and some design skill then you can certainly do it yourself but for $5 you can get some superb covers on Fiverr. Moreover, if you are willing to pay a little bit extra (usually just another $5) you can even get the seller to use a high quality stock photo which he will purchase from one of the major stock photo sites thus ensuring that it is licensed for use.

Don't be too quick to condemn others without having all of the facts!

I create mine myself. That way I can make sure I only use images I own. Also, before you buy an image on a stock image site and use it for your book cover, make sure you read the license you're purchasing. A few of the stock image sites have images that appear to be inexpensive at first glance, but the cheaper license disallows use of the image for book covers and items that are to be resold. For that you have to buy a much more expensive license...

The key to any great book cover design, or logo design, or header design, etc, is the talent of the designer - the human that comes up with the idea and the implementation.

Software ebook design programs are fine but they guarantee nothing.

Having Photoshop (which is the graphic industry editor standard) is fine, but it doesn't guarantee a great design.

Outsourcing to those who advertise design services (whether Fiverr or Odesk, or 99 Designs, etc, is no guarantee either.

The very best you can do is find a great designer and hire her/him and don't be too concerned about the fee.
