Is there a How to Use Facebook tutorial?

I've been on Facebook for a long while. However, I don't use it much because:

1) It runs so darn slow!

2) It's hard to find one's way around.

3) How do you use it to market/brand yourself, etc?

4) What other features am I neglecting to find/use?

I know I'm not utilizing Facebook to even half it's potential ... but I'm having trouble figuring things out there.

Heck, I can't even tell people what the URL to my profile is!

    I completely disagree.

It's very fast, easy to use, etc.

For marketing... you need an app to really do well.

Facebook is awesome. I like to think of it as the 21st Century version of AOL, only with much more potential. The way I plan to use it, eventually, is in creating business pages for free and keeping in contact with customers who purchase from my websites via IM. There are a lot of useful plugins for Facebook as well. I use Pidgen, which is an instant messenger that manages AOL Instant Messenger, Facebook Messenger, and a whole host of other direct chat programs. Facebook also comes with a chatroom feature, so you can carry on actual group discussions about your products and/or services.

I don't know, I think that's powerful enough. I haven't even figured out all of its useful tricks for making money yet.

Ok, so how do you find these plugins?

      • To be honest. Facebook has recently updated their entire engine, and it seems to have been made a bit more difficult to use for first time users.

Use google, and search specific topics, and they have good information for you to find what you are looking for.

Also, Facebook has a very nice HELP section that helps you to understand the information you are having troubles with.

Like SIS said, you've gotta look for them. Pidgen is simple to find and install from searching on Google.

I guess you'd call it an application, not a plug in. At any rate, there are many applications out there that make using social media sites more manageable. Twirl is an application that allows you to update Twitter with Tweets without requiring you to go to Twitter's website. You also receive tweets as well.

There are all sorts of little things out there. I like Ed Dale's 30DayChallenge for all the little things you can do with Twitter and ways to automate a lot of the work like following other members of Twitter. There is an application (I can't remember what it is called, haven't installed it yet) that automatically follows people on Twitter. If they don't start following you after a specified amount of time, you stop following them. It apparently helps with trying to build a group of followers.

I'm waiting for the application that applies 'Tweet Relevance' to this. I'd download the app that searches Twitter and follows only users who have tweeted specific topics. That way, I get followers who have an interest in what I tweet about and pay attention to me

        I like attention.

I have to agree with the OP. I find Facebook slow and hard to understand. I rarely use it, but I do have an account with many friends. I update my status through TweetDeck. But, other than that I really do not use it.

I would probably use it more if I knew what the heck I was doing.

So, like the original poster asked... does anyone have any tutorials?

          Regards,

    Hi Barbara,

" 3) How do you use it to market/brand yourself, etc?"

View your Facebook profile like a combination curriculum vitae and first time customer's brochure. Just tell your story and you'll do fine. Then, join a few Facebook groups related to your business or market, read, reply, and make friends, and give the people what they want.

If you're having trouble with the technical aspects of Facebook (!), I suggest bribing a teenage geek. The girlfriend's freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies have worked well in the past.

    Hope this helps,

    Cousin Lucky

Glad I wasn't the only one having problems with Facebook.

I can't figure out how to get to Groups and Pages, unless someone provides me a link to their Group or Page. There's no links anywhere on that site to anything! It's very un-user friendly because their navigation stinks.

The way I see it you can use Facebook in two ways. You can try and make money off of it or you can just use it to keep in touch with your friends.

I really can't understand people finding it hard to use. It's pretty damn straight forward.

As far as making money off of it is concerned, ExtremeIM is dead right, Apps are the way to go.

Personally I just use it to keep in touch, but I would like to venture into apps this year sometime.

To answer your question, the problem with creating a "how to" guide would be that they keep changing the user interface so you would have to keep it up to date.
