What services to expect from "Managed VPS" hosting?

I'm looking at a few managed VPS hosts, and am wondering what services can we expect and not expect from this kind of hosting?

Will they support cpanel / whm questions and issues?

Will they support DNS/cname, etc, issues?

What about apps like WordPress?

Thanks very much.

Most likely they will support the vps and not the software. So dns, etc yes and wordpress no.
You would need to ask before you buy.

Managed services will in most cases support the server itself, php engine, cPanel, security, software installers etc. Depending on the company, they may/may not assist with problems at the website level.

    • Can I expect to have full root access and ability to install any legitimate software on a VPS?

Yep, as long as it does not violate the hosts terms of service. Typically, with a managed VPS, at least with my company we recommend that customers using a managed VPS request we make any system changes (php engine, apache/litespeed/mysql etc) to keep from having any issues.

I know that WiredTree does this same thing - they'd rather do system changes or if you make a change and a problem arises, consult with them first before an outsider.

Definitely. Of course, every VPS providers offer different Terms of Service. Some may not like having a certain kind of software installed in their VPSes, and some may. It would be wise to check on the Terms of Services first. But of course, as long as it's legitimate, usually it will be fine.

Are regular nightly backups generally provided with a VPS with some providers (in case system get hosed, can revert back to back up from previous image) ?
Some providers offer that kind of service, but for a price.

Also, are there any compatibility issues / problems for me to be aware of insofar as litespeed? Is litespeed better than apache in any genuine way?
Get the right license for it. Free Licenses are typically worthless, especially when you're about to start a big project in it.

Never be shy in asking what a specific VPS hoster has to offer in order to gain your expectations and maximize its full potentials. Ask them every little bit of information. If a Live Chat is possible, go for it, otherwise, use the contact page for information.

It depends on each vendor policy, so you can get root level or not. In our business, by default, we don't provide root access to fully managed customers. Not all customers are tech guys, they might delete some system files that prevents server working correctly. We will take care everything on server side, including system software setup, optimizing, securing, data backing up, etc.

Anyway, you should contact each vendor to find out what they are offering on management service.

Again, it really depends on each vendor policy. You should have a list of vendors, then contact each of them to find out what they include in management plan. I see some managed vendors charge data backup fee, it's not included.

In fact, we have customers from others several times because of that. They only do management, but no data backup. Then when hardware had trouble, customers lost data.

You should ask in details before placing order.

For litespeed, make sure you have correct license. Free license will not help much. And VPS license is limited at 1 core CPU, if I am correctly.

Thanks for that tip. What other resources are normally included or limited besides CPU cores?
