Are they offering me enough for this domain?

I've owned a domain for about 5 years now. Had an idea, got the domain, and just parked it until it was time to launch. I just started building out the site (niche not really relevant).

I was contacted by someone that owns the .net version of the domain (I have the .com, and got it before them). They have a "real" (not IM) business. The .net version is the primary domain for them (not smart for them but good for me). And while they have a "real" business, the niche is actually very related to what I was developing.

So they'd like to buy the domain. I'll reveal the offer but before I do so I'd like to get some ideas from people on what they would accept.

If I weren't going to actually use the domain I'd clearly sell it. But it's about 3 weeks away from launch. And given that we're in the same niche, it's clearly more valuable since I'll probably pick up some of their traffic from people who go to .com instead of .net. It's also a very clever name for the niche and probably not one I'll easily replace.

So, what would you accept in this situation?

This one's really perplexing: you want "ideas from people" on what they'd accept for a domain-name, the figures to be suggested on the basis of their not knowing what the domain-name is?

I don't think it matters what the domain name is. It's not a dictionary name, and without this other business around it would have minimal value. It's sole value comes from the fact that there is a business that bought and grew their site using the .net version and that my niche is related to theirs.

But I do understand I'm not giving up a lot. Posting the domain name wouldn't be too smart, I would think.

It would if you want to know what people would take for it. I've sold a couple of hundred domain-names, but believe it or not I knew what they all were, when I decided what to take for them.

Why not take it all the way to and past the launch.

Make them sweat, divert some of their traffic, etc....then negotiate from that point. Bet you might triple your money from the current offer.

    Why not tickle their jimmies?

YOU are in control of the situation, so make them give you what you want!

When they get the domain, they will be making more money, so it's worth to overspend for it!

I would test out the website to see what kinds of conversions I get. If I like the number of sales, then I would keep that domain to myself. No need to sell it.

Since you won't tell us the domain or the offer then I would suggest. YES sell it today it is a great deal. Don't wait, you could lose.

Thats my advice, you get what you pay for

What figure would it take for you to be happy walking away from the domain?

If their offer is greater than or equal to that number, take it and don't look back.

If it's less, and you'd be just as happy keeping and developing the domain, counter with the number you came up with above.

I would consider looking at how much they are willing to give you for it compared to how much income you could make by doing your product launch. Not to mention all the maintenance and clerical work that comes with owning a site. If the price is right money up front my be a better choice imo

So you won't divulge the domain name or how much they offered for it?
How do you expect to get serious answers, evaluations?

What you going to do when they quit being nice and decide you are infringing on their trademark? If their business is older than your domain purchase .. it is possible.

It absolutely matters what the domain name is. Would others want it if you put it up for sale publicly? There's a big difference in value if 100 people want a one-of-a-kind product as opposed to just one.

Yeah, no one can really answer what the domain is worth with how little information you've given.

If, say, your domain was installingflooringdesmoines.com it's going to be worth a lot less than if your domain was hardwarestore.com

So yeah, there's basically no way we can tell you what your domain is worth.

Like most business/trading, it all comes down to a price that the buyer is willing to pay and the seller accepting that offer.

If you think they have a good offer, take it.

If you think their offer is too low, then go back to them with a price you'd be willing to accept.

You can't expect anyone to give you dollar figures without knowing what the business is, what their initial offer is and how keen they might be.

    Selling domain = confirm money
Selling product = not yet confirm

Just calculate how much money you can make with the product launch in 30 days.
Then, ask yourself, whether, you can sell the product with other domain?
if yes, selling domain + product launch = extra income

if not, calculate, how much "opportunity" you are going to give up.

ps : let them offer you first, from there, you can control the game.
pps : not all real business making money, come on, you know that right?

Very simple situation according to your post. Answer that domain name is not for sale unless you get offer you cant refuse. Short and sweet, with regards and dont leave open conversation.

Then you will get message from them with max 50% of their best offer. Then the game will start

Kind of like asking if they're offering enough for a house without seeing the house. All domains are not created equal

Perhaps he doesn't want someone to contact the company and help them get the domain for free if there is some sort of trademark violation or copyright involved.

If they approached you, sell it, because the next step for them is to take legal action to get their domain.

Dude, you should sell the domain name to be on the bright and safe side. They can easily file a trademark infringment case against you if their business is older than your domain. So act smart.

Something has a value based on what someone is willing to PAY for, not what you ask for.

To evaluate the value of the business they expect online you should at least mention the market they are in, and what average customer value they see over the traffic for your keywords.

If they can close 10 deals over the traffic over YOUR domain worth 20k a month, you definitely have a better position to negotiate then if the domain is for a local bakery shop.

You have to ask the right questions to get the right answers buddy.

I think your domain is worth $162.78.

      Give or take a little....or a lot.

How in the world do you think we would know. No details. This is akin to telling a mechanic that your car "wont go" and expecting an estimate of the cost to fix it. All he can say is "dont know".

I would definitely sell it if the price was decent.

Once I was also offered $1000 for a domain which I bought for 19 bucks from godaddy auction. I refused to sell the domain expecting few hundred dollars more. I still have that domain and now I feel that I should simply grabbed 1000 bucks and invest that money in other domains.

    Just sell your domain.
Do your own calculation how much you will sell for that domain.
Use the money that you get to open more business online.
