Amazon made some changes to the specs earlier this year.

For the external cover you upload to KDP they suggest a 1563 x 2500 px jpeg file. This replaces their previous limit of 1280 px as the largest dimension.
For the internal cover (the one you place in your MOBI file) it's still 600 x 800 px.

You'll note that these are not the same aspect ratio, some users upload a 1875 x 2500 px cover instead to retain the aspect ratio.

If you're planning to publish to the other self-publishing sites they all have slightly different specs. Barnes and Noble for example use 600 x 730 for the external cover and 600 x 1024 for the internal one when publishing via PubIT. Apple uses 600 x 860 for both if you are publishing on the iBook Store.

You should not place a cover inside your book file at all because it will create a "double cover" issue.

I do all of our covers at 1563x2500 and you upload directly to Amazon and not within the book file.

No, not that I know of, because that site is for eCovers that will be displayed ONLY online, in 72 dpi.

You need something that can be printed in offline, which is at minimum 150 dpi.

Plus you will also need to use images and graphics that are also high in resolution, or you will get lots of image distortion. It will look very bad.

Honestly, the best way to go about what you want to do, is to hire a professional designer, someone who can design an eCover with images and graphics that are the correct resolution.
