Webstats - What to they mean?

I have had a few people ask me recently what all these web stats actually mean. I thought I would post here what they all mean for anyone who doesnt already know.

- A Unique Visitor:
The most important stat I believe is the unique's. Each unique visitor is identified with a IP address. This IP address is either Static ( doesnt change ) or can be dynamic ( new IP each time they connect to the net ). This means that the vistior is counted only once per time frame. The time frame is usaully a 24 hour period. The time frame depends on the tracking program.

This essientially means that even if the visitor returns to your site 4-5 times in one day, they will only be counted One time. This is a very useful stat.

The downfall to this is that some schools and/or companies will have one IP for several users, meaning that at times 1 unquie might actually be 15 people.

- Page Views:
This means how many times each page of your website was viewed. This will give you how long the user's spent on each page and will let you know which pages are most popular, or in other words the interest level.

- Hit requests: This stat lets you know how many files are transfered from your server to the user. For example, Free Music Downloads - Free MP3 Downloads - Free Streaming Music would have a high hit requests as there is alot of images of that page. The hit request also includes the html page + style sheets ect, not just images.

- Referals: Shows where the user came from, such as google.com, yahoo.com or a forum like this one for example ect ect..

Hope this helps,

I think you left very important parameter of webstat that is

Bounce rate : The percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality - a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren't relevant to your visitors.
