Pricing Advice Needed For Membership Site

Hey everyone,
I'm planning on launching a membership site in a few months and could use some advice. I'm not new to the online space, but a newby when it comes to membership sites. I run a small business blog (thesmallbusinessplaybook.com) and want to create a paid membership site. It's going to be a online portal for small business owners, like an online operations manual for their business along with a community.

Most of my audience is not entirely tech savvy, but have traditional businesses (retail, services professions, etc). I'm not sure how to price it. I've seen everything from 5 bucks a month to hundreds, with dozens of options in between. Does anyone have suggestions/experience on an optimal pricing strategy. I'm not exactly sure of the ongoing costs (time/money) either so I would love some feedback. Cheers!

Compare your service to other available similar services. Also the question is how much value you will bring each month.

Thanks for the comments Gordon, do you have experience with a membership site?

as gordon suggested, compare with other services as you will be competing with them. Don't set your pricing to low to bankrupt yourself and not make it worth the effort but set a price you feel your support is worth

Thanks Johnlang, prices range from 10-70 a month with somewhat related sites. I've joined a few membership sites in the past and have found quality doesn't necessarily relate to the pricing structure that was implemented.

Hi, if you can offer high quality content, which small businesses can actually implement, and help them grow, then go for the higher price point $70(maybe even more), if not then the lower $20-30.

Maybe I would even make a calculation on how many clients I need to achieve my desired income goal.

Kristian made an excellent suggestion. Consider your monthly income target. Consider, too, your initial target market (esp if the market is a local one as opposed to an online one). How many clients will you need to meet the target income?

You could also use a higher price point after an initial offering that allows charter members to sign up for less and limit the discounted signups by a set number of signups or an expiration date.

Thanks for the input BizLady, I like the idea of an initial pricing strategy and possibly adjusting it later while grandfathering in older members. I'll give that some though, cheers!

    Thanks Kristian,
Thanks for the suggestions, I've heard the lifespan of a member is somewhere between 3-6 months, not sure if that is accurate. I guess I have to make the decision to have less members at a higher price point or more with a lower one. Thanks

I have my own IM membership site which i have been running for quite a while so the advice i give you is not just theory :-)

I won't go into too much detail but these are the main tips

    1. Firstly, the setting up of membership sites is not a walk in the park. There is a lot of technical stuff that you need to set up and also test before you let anything go live. You can outsource all of this but it will of course cost more.

    2. The price is very important to how successful your membership site will be. At first I would keep it fairly cheap and then as you progress and build members you can increase the price

    3. Use a decent membership script which includes an affiliate program. Having affiliates is one of the main components of a successful membership site

    The tools i use are:

optimize press (membership platform) $97 one time
fastmember plug in (membership security software) $197 - $297 one time

i could easily write 20 pages of things you need to do and must not do but i hope these few basic
    tips help :-)

      Hey Paul,
Really appreciate the tips, lots to think about. I purchased Wishlist Member as I'm on WP, not sure how I'm going to go about an affiliate program yet. How do you think it would work (what % I would need to give) with a $20-30 price point? Appreciated!

a 50% commission to affiliates would work fine

to start with keep the price fairly low just to get people through the doors

        $12.95, $17, $19.95 would be ok

i currently offer a $1 trial in my membership which works really well and once they see the value that you provide they will stay

So you suggest keeping a low price point (19.95) to start building the membership and then increase the price once it has a good member base?
How long do you offer the $1 membership for? And is it full access or limited access? Thanks for answering these newby questions, appreciated!

average lifespan for an 'individual member' is about 3-6 months for membership but if its business to business you are going for then you could probably expect whatever month they join until the end of their financial year when they review their outgoings and cut off what they dont need to be spending on. If however, you are providing good quality information that they can implement in their own business to turn a profit or achieve better results then there's no reason they wont stay as members. Just remember that communication with these businesses is imperative, contact them fairly regularly to 'catch up' and get some feedback on the information you are giving them, do they want you to cover a specific topic, maybe a return for their business for exposure if you run an ezine or something.

8485, thanks for the advice. I've been in a few membership programs before and you're exactly right, you start to lose interest and forget it's there without constant interaction. I just recently left one as I don't think the founders of the program ever set foot in it, the forum was dead and no one to be found.

It's going to be a BtoB scenario so with the price point ($20-30 range), I'm pretty confidant I can over deliver on value for quite sometime. The question is the best way to drive potential customers beyond my current blog and some paid SEM. Cheers, appreciate the help!

You can charge $19.90 per month. People seem to like this number when its come to membership.

I was thinking the $20-30 range, and I agree, I think that's a palatable number to keep people beyond the typical 3-4 months....as long as the value is there. Thanks!

If the current price in the market right now is 10 - 70 per month. If I were you I will start at $10 a month for the first 100 to join then increase $7 to the 101st - 200th member. Then increase $10 to the 201st - 1000th

Thanks for the pricing suggestions, I assume the older members would be grandfathered into their original pricing plan? Cheers

Yes you need to assure your members that their membership fee is lock in...

I would suggest you to keep it between $10. If you set up above that, I think most of the audience will not be interested to subscribe as a member in your site.

Thanks for the feedback Alex, what's you reasoning as to why people wouldn't pay above $10? Thanks
