New and learning - Niches

Hi all
I have been brainstorming the past few days thinking of niches that I could get involved in. I am staying well away from the whole 'make money online' niche as there is way too much competition for my little beginner brain!! I am thinking pregnancy (seeing as I am , what better place to start lol) but does anyone think this is a niche that people would want info etc about?
Thanks
xx

Just a couple of things to consider about that niche...none of these are bad things, just things to keep in mind.
    • there's always going to be a market out there (no brainer, right?)
    • that market will only need "pregnancy" info for a finite period of time, so you might need additional products/info/etc that appeals to "new parents" or something like that also
    • there are lots of sites on that topic already, both product sites and content sites, to there's good potential for joint ventures with those folks
    • there's also a lot of free info on that topic, both online and offline, so you'd need something to differentiate what you're offering vs. the rest of the pack - don't let that stop you though...I bet a lot of us have purchased infoproducts that contained at least some freely available info. It's just faster and there's value in that.

A quick check at Clickbank will give you lots of ideas for what's out there in that market. Stuff like:
    • stopping morning sickness
    • increasing fertility
    • post-pregnancy weight loss (that sounds like a particularly good one)
    • natural childbirth
    • etc...

Not that I'd limit myself to just Clickbank, but it's an easy place to see what's already out there.

Just a couple of thoughts that came to mind.

Yeah, you're probably onto something there.

Good luck and hope that helps.

    Kenton

Thanks for the reply. I actually have a bit of a different idea regardig pregnancy as I have seen a lot of 'symptoms of pregnancy, 'how to stop morning sickness' etc so a lot of competition, but my idea is slightly more unique, dont really want to give too much away just now, but it has more to do with pregnancy related 'things' that people may not want to be so open about.
Once again thanks for the info, I am just glad to get people's insight and advice on all my many questions:-)

    Hey Jackqui,

If you are starting out I wouldn't complicate things too much. I think it is best to go on an affilliate network, choose a hot converting product, and build your promotion around that.

There will be a lot of frustration at first and you do not want to make things harder on yourself by choosing something that won't make you money in the first place.

The idea when starting out is to simply get the ball rolling and build confidence. Not to say that pregnancy isn't a hot converting niche, perhaps it is. But make sure you do your due diligence beforehand.

Try choosing a niche and going to message boards and forums devoted to that niche. If there are a lot of people talking about a problem they are desperate to solve, you could have a winner. If there are lots of people talking about how much money they've already spent trying to solve that problem, even better.

    Hi Jackqui,

In addition to pregnancy only being a topic for a limited time, there's also the question about how to build credibility for your information. Unless you have someone with medical credentials involved, you risk potential buyers being skeptical. Even worse, you risk an "alphabet agency" of the government shutting you down if you don't have the appropriate disclaimers.

I wonder if something about marriage & family - not just limited to pregnancy - might be a better area of success. Without giving away your topic, could you make the pregnancy portion one chapter of something that would be useful to couples or families the rest of the time?

As for measuring niches, search here for discussion of Google Keyword External.

Another quick check is found at larger libraries: SRDS (Standard Rate and Data Service) guide to publications. This will give you a brief description of magazines in different niches, including how many subscribers there are and how much advertisements cost. If there are several magazines with overlapping audience interest, and they have around the same number of subscribers, that shows the size of the market. Then you can compare the ad costs to see how profitable that market is, since the magazine can only sell ad space over time if it's cost effective for advertisers.

I like Neil's suggestion to find an existing product.

Now here's the exciting part: if you build a list of people interested in pregnancy, could you set your autoresponder to send them a monthly newsletter about infant care for the first year - a monthly newsletter about toddler care the next year - a monthly newsletter about preschools and tricycles the next year?

    Regards,
    Allen
