HELP! What CMS / Platform Would You Choose?

Hi,

I have a client who wants to launch a large web site, which would grow in phases to eventually have forums, social networking, web store, etc.

One of my options is to go the Custom-Joomla-site route and pile on layer by layer.

But I wanted to know what you would recommend...

A custom built site? Or a hosted platform?

Any recommendations you may have for: Software, Platform, Hosted Service, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

- Ravi

Depending on your level of comfort with deploying larger scale CMS's, you might want to consider Bitrix or even Ektron. Both of these are suitable for large sites. They're not free, but do have all the components you require, and can be easily scaled up to operate in web farm if the site grows as hoped.

    • Joomla - Good for quick setup. Even for large websites. But very difficult to maintain, upgrade, maintain patches etc etc.
    • Drupal - Solid architecture and can be used for large websites. EVen one of the Sony's websites uses Drupal. But difficult to administer.
    • Wordpress - Imemdiate SEO benefits, easy admin, quick setup, can be used on large websites. But sometimes becomes difficult if the main purpose is not blogging.
    • Expression Engine - Large websites, extremely flexible, can do virtually anything from site layouts to site logic (programming within cms). I picked up this after testing other open source CMS for over three years. Over 100 of my clients have moved to Expression Engine when I showed them what it can do.
But what's the main purpose of your client's website? Membership, blog, ecommerce, static site..?

  • Drupal all the way -- it's the most powerful thing out there, and it's free. Sure, the learning curve is kind of steep, but there is a reason that so many huge corporate sites run on this amazing platform.

Second choice would be Plone. People who use it swear by it.

PHP-Nuke used to be good, but I haven't used it for a couple of years so I'm not sure it's kept up. Their website is down as I write this -- not a good sign.

Avoid Joomla like the plague. That's my opinion. It's quick and easy, but the second you want to do anything custom, look out.

Wordpress is OK if you're just looking to do a blog.

Whatever you do, don't spend money on a CMS -- there are a lot of good free ones out there.

Drupal - you will not go wrong learning how to implement and
develop large sites with it - there is a greater demand for
competent Drupal freaks than there is supply.

Wordpress and Drupal are our choices.

Either one, a knowledge of php and css comes in handy.

I recommend Drupal by far. You don't want to run anything super large with personal data (e-commerce) on wordpress or Joomla! imho.
