Recently I've noticed this button used more often. I have a hard time trying to explain why, but there is something about it that I don't really like. Is it proven to convert better than other buttons?

I feel as if I'm in a supermarket doing weekly shopping. Its very counter - hype for me.

What do you think? Personal XP?

It's just what many customers are accustomed to. Amazon and many of the big sites use it. It's just like Click Here or You've Got Mail. People feel comfortable with what they're used to seeing in most cases.

They are more comfortable with the purchase as opposed to "buy now" which sounds like the costumers are parting with their money and spending a lot.

    I understand.
Wouldn't "Get Access", "Access Now" or something similar, which doesn't concentrate on the fact that you'll be spending money and puts the attention back to the product, deliver better results?

PP: "Self Made" <== stealing that

You don't want to make a big hype about it. A big old 'buy now' button makes them sit back and consider their purchase again. 'Add to cart' makes the process more normal as though it isn't a big deal that they're spending big on your site.

It's been tested pretty extensively, 'Add To Cart' wins hands down. That's why Amazon and other huge sellers use it. You can bet they tested it.

It's one of those thing you should test for your own market, but Add To Cart
is my default because it's proven to work.

Refering to mrelk, CTL and Jeremy

Anything that includes the word "buy" is obviously less than ideal, but the word ADD in particular suggests that the buyer is aquiring more than one product and at the same time it gives a more simplistic atmosphere (supermarket, amazon, ebay) which I feel is a negative touch to an info product.

Buyers should be hyped, excited and ready to take action (isn't that what we preach?). Especially in IM, where people are well aware that really EXCELLENT products don't pop up daily, making them more conscious. While it's giving this relaxed and harmless feeling, isn't it better to make our customers excited?

Does it have to be a cart though?

Basket sounds so much nicer. Add to basket.

Or does it sound too British?

I'm currently split testing Add to Cart vs Gimme Your Money Now . Certain things are worth testing, others not so much.

It turns the whole buying process into a picnic in the park with Pimms!

I have seen on some high end sites eg. for jewelry, they have added a popup menu that states 'Continue shopping' or 'view cart'. that was pleasant.

Originally, people had these stupid buttons to buy a product. When things got better, they managed to group items, so they could be stored and/or bought at once. It makes things better. The group is called a cart, after the idea of a shopping cart in a store. So add to cart makes sense.

It ALSO allows the group to be analyzed for discounts, premiums, shipping, and handling.

FAR from hype, it is often just the best way to do it.

Of course, many still sell only one item and the advantage isn't as clear.

BTW This has to be international. The most isolated, and at least formerly biggest, customer is the US. "Add to cart" may already be internationally understood. A change like "add to basket" may actually INCREASE problems.
