Some kind of ICANN ruling...

ICANN | Advisory: Add Grace Period Limits Policy

Can someone tell me what this is about, in simple(ton) terms?

Thanks.

Some marketers use the "tasting" method to test domain names. They register a domain, then test its ability to draw traffic for a few days. If they're not satisfied, they request a refund on their registration fees (there is a certain amount of time where you can get your money back). The ICANN announcement is about limiting the number of domains those people can do that with and not pay a fine/penalty.

That translation may not be specific enough for some, but that's essentially what it says.

So you can still do it, but there's a limit on how many names you can do it with. Yes?

In plain english, the ICANN board sets limits on each registrars, and the amount of grace deletions that are allowed, which means yes, you can still "taste" a domain with your registrar, only, your refund is no longer guranteed as before.

In other words, if say GD was allowed grade deletions of 10% of new domains that were registered, that means if you're one of the lucky 10% customer, you will get a refund for your domain, if you're not one of the lucky 10%, than bad luck!. Also, most registrars are now charging $1 per grace deletion (that's if you're lucky enough to be one of those domainers who will get a chance to delete their domains!)....

      "Dynadot's Version

      Grace Deletions
      • Most domains can be grace deleted within 5 days of registration.
      • You can request a grace deletion from the control panel in the account area.
      • We will give a Dynadot account credit for the full purchase amount minus the deletion fee. This credit can be used for future orders.
      • ICANN limits the deletion rate for the gtlds (non country tlds). If the 'Curr Rate' field is close the the 'Max Rate' field, your grace deletion may not be processed. If this happens, you have to keep the domain. "
