How do I make my "Gift Site" an authority site?

For example with a weight loss site, I put sections on: scientific studies, weight loss reviews, articles, story how i lost weight, various lists like calorie lists, glycemic indexes, other resources.

For a "gift site" all I can think of is articles, reviews, and list of good gift ideas (which is kinda bland).

How can I extend this on my gift site to give users a better overall experience when they visit my site? Instead of basically trying to pitch them to click on an affiliate link or adsense ad.

I think you could get somewhere with creating lists.

Every time I go onto MSN they always have a compiled list on the front page, there are so many possibilities with list.

If you have a lot of lists for different types of gifts it could help you on your way, I understand how you are limited. Personally I love reading lists like best selling albums or top horror movie quotes and you could link to the movies and albums.

Are you trying to focus on only one occasion like birthday gift ideas? If so, then you can categories your site into different sexes (birthday gifts for her, Birthday gifts for him, Birthday gifts for boy, girl, friend, mom, dad, uncle--etc)

If it is a general gifts site, you may consider having categories for different occassions (eg. Birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation, christmas etc----) Your different posts (if its is on wordpress) will go to any of the many categories you have.

From there on, you will see that you will even come up with categories you never though about at the start.

You can have a look at this site and I hope you can get some inspiration from it on how to design your site as an authority from the start.

What is important is that you put very careful planning at the start. It is paramount that you decide your categories at subcategories at the start to avoid changing post categories which will hurt your rankings. Just put enough time at the planning phase.

You can start to promote your site by blog commenting with relevant niche sites and slightly transform your link building efforts to promote by niche topics on forums and by various ways.

If you sell products or promote affiliate sales through your website, you should learn about 'how to build traffic for targeted audience and sales' and target relevant keywords by link building.

Articles, reviews, lists - none of them have to be bland. Anyone can slap a steak under a broiler, wait the proper time, and have a cooked piece of meat. It's the seasoning and side dishes that separate the fine steak house from the Sizzler.

Lists can take you a long way in this category if you let them. For a start, you could work the humor angle with lists of the most inappropriate gifts, how not to re-gift, etc. Sitcoms have been getting mileage out of bad/wrong gifts for years.

Add practical advice and well-seasoned lists of great gifts (with affiliate links), gift-related funny videos, etiquette, etc.

It's only bland if you forget to add the spice...

Great post. Also, if people are already on your list, they value your opinion. That is a tremendous advantage. Use it correctly. Too many people think this is a permission to blast cheesy advertising. Each email must build engagement unless you get their specific permission to market a certain way (interspersed with content).

I don't think John is meaning Lists in the sense of subscribers. I think he means lists of things like a list of: 10 great gifts for a wedding. 5 gifts not to give on a girlfriend's birthday etc

I think if you do it like a card store would you could expand greatly.

    For example:
Anniversaries , Birthdays , Holidays , Special Occasions, Unfortunate Occurances ,and then branch out lower and lower

You can use WPRobot and use it to add videos, yahoo answers, PRs, articles, comparing products and so on. However, original content must be included as well. There should be useful offers and products in that niche that you can use in this site as well, and you just have to look out and find them.

Hi denutza, I'd put something like sports, video games, beauty, etc., like the categories of amazon.com, for example, since all commercial products that are given as gifts fall into one of them.

Not sure if you are selling actual products? If so, a shopping Cart will certainly help to generate sales. If not, simply load up amazon cart.

People are looking for gift ideas, no point giving much advice/information without the actual products.

Don't think Adsense can generate good revenue as compare to Products sales these days. So unreliable..
