Selling domain names without escrow, how do you protect yourself from fraud?

Assuming that I want to sell my domain names without escrow, how do you project yourself from fraud? I don't want to sell my domain name only to have a charge back PayPal for whatever reasons.

I'm thinking of asking my client to sign and fax so that in case of fraud, I have proof to show PayPal that I have indeed sold the domain name.

So have anyone successfully sold domain names without using escrow? If so, how do you do it? Or the best way is still escrow?

With Paypal there is no guarantee that you will win the dispute even with a fax. I have, but you can't count on it. There is no real protection for selling domains via Paypal rather than using escrow. All you could really do is stipulate that the domain nameservers will be pointed at the buyer's host, but will not be transferred until 60 days or whatever amount of days it is that Paypal allows a dispute. I've done this before but not all buyers are going to like it. Why not just use escrow?

Well, I'm exploring various options because escrow does cost a bit, and I'm not using Flippa.

If you have recommendations for a good escrow, I'll appreciate it.

The only one I've used for selling domains is escrow.com, which seems safe and reliable enough.

In the price-bracket in which I usually deal, their $25 minimum is a nuisance, but I always manage to share that with the buyer.

If I'm selling for under $100, I usually don't bother, and just take a chance. I've had a couple of "accidents" with thieves. I've paid reg-fee only for all the domains I sell, anyway.

Joseph, as Suzanne mentioned, Escrow.com is the way to go. It really does not cost much, and protects both parties. You can choose to have the fees go to you, or to your buyer, or split 50/50.
