I need the help of professionals only... Is this a good keyword to rank for?

This keyword has:

  1. 368,000 searches last month according to Google's Keyword Tool
  2. 299,000 results without quotes
  3. Amazon, Cnet, gadget review, pc stats and next tag on the front page

Upon Using Yahoo Site Explorer to check back links (in order of google ranking):

Sorry, I tried spacing them but it wont let me... =/
  1. wwx.nexttag.com/keyword/compare-html = 33 Inlinks, all from next tag
  2. wwx.nexttag.com/keyword/search-html = 622 inlinks, all from next tag
  3. wwx.amazon.com/keyword/xx/xxxxxxxxxx = 397 Inlinks, all from amazon
  4. wwx.amazon.com/keyword/xx/xxxxxxxxxx = 3,837 Inlinks, all from amazon
  5. wwx.cnet.com/xxxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxxxx-x.html = 44 Inlinks, all from cnet
  6. wwx.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=xxxxx = 18 Inlinks, all from onecall
  7. wwx.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=xxxx = 1,021 Inlinks, all from pcstats
  8. wwx.gadgetreview.com/xxxx/xx/keyword.html = 4 Inlinks, 1 from a different website
  9. ww-mp3.us/keyword = 158 Inlinks, some from different websites

According to this information, in your opinion would aiming for this keyword be justifiale,or is this a dud? And if it is a dud, what is your reasoning behind it?

I appreciate all responses with this matter... this could mean the difference between sparse sales and big money!

Just a tip for your links, try using the [noparse] tag to unhyperlink them.

As for your keyword research, I think you're overcomplicating just a bit. What I'd do when choosing a keyword would be to look at commercial intent, number of competing pages, and number of searches.

I've never used Yahoo Site Explorer, so I don't know what all that stuff is, but since I've never used it before, that means it's probably not necessary

there's noway to know if it's worth ranking for w/o knowing if the people searching it are willing to buy something. It would probably be good for adsense, but if it involves actually selling something, there's no way to tell w/o knowing the term.
I will guess 'no', only because the competition seems so weak.

it's how you find out how many backlinks you or your competitors has.. it is certainly neccessary info. All the other kw info is worthless if you don't know how hard it will be to place (# of competing sites does not matter if the top sites have weak backlinks). Since google does not give real info with the 'link:' command, yahoo site explorer is the nest best things there is.

      Hello again Jason

Well I can't give away the keyword haha, but if it helps clarify things a bit, its for a specific product and those pages are either review pages (like cnet) or pages where people can buy the product (amazon)

now if I am going for specific products instead of niches and the term gets a high volume of searches, wouldn't your comment about the competition looking weak be just the thing that I need?

    Curtis,

    here's an example:

if I told you that you were going to be in a race, and there were 1000 other participants, would you be able to tell me how well you would place?

Now, what if I told you how fast the top 10 people were?

Which would give you the better indication of your chances of placing in the top 10?

    Hey Jason,

Thanks for the quick lesson I still probably won't use it, but it's definitely good to know what it is.

It's just that I've been able to rank a few pages on the first page of Google without using anything except the Adwords keyword tool, so I assumed I didn't need anything else. I guess it's always nice to have another tool at your disposal for this kind of stuff!

      Hi Curits,

Yeah I tend to overthink things lol, I feel that I can rank for page one for this product, I just need to make sure because building backlinks is not fun after building them for 4 other websites =/
