I want to run this idea by you guys.

I am an artist - can draw & sculpt etc.

In drawing there is a method called size-sight. What you do is have a classical plaster cast and you place your drawing so it lines up & scales visually to your sketchpad.

Then you can draw a grid & lines and the drawing is the exact same size & dimensions as in your line of sight.

Normally this is done in a studio with a collection of beautiful plaster casts.

You can control the light & shadow etc on the subject.

My idea is to useHTML5 webGL & 3d models of sculptures.

Artists can login and save the lighting & angle for a particular subject. This way they dont need the hassle of a collection of plaster casts & they can determine the lighting & positioning exactly.

I can make money on the back end providing it as a free service.

What do you guys think - only hassle I can see is getting the 3D cad models

Turbosquid is expensive.

      Gareth, I love the idea.

You'd be doing something unusual and useful, while providing a free service. That's a powerful combination when you're trying to to free publicity.

Assuming your service is genuinely useful, you should be able to get wonderful free publicity from artists' magazines, newsletters, websites, forums and blogs. They should all be interested in writing items about your site and/or publishing a guest article written by you. With luck, you might be interviewed, too.

I reckon that's the best sort of website to own - one that people are keen to talk about.

I know very little about art. My only concern is whether enough artists would be interested in using your free service. I assume you've talked to artists and decided that there is a market out there?

Usually, before creating a website, you'd want to have a very clear idea of what you'd be selling, but I once started a website with no idea what products I would sell, simple because I saw people asking on forums for certain information that no website was providing. I surprised myself with that site - I intended up hiring a full-time assistant to run it for several years.

Sometimes, you can start with an idea, generate traffic, and then figure out what to sell them.

As long as you are sure enough people will be interested, go for it!

I think your idea is awesome... specially when is that specific and when it's related to something you know about! you are more likely to do it with passion and if done correctly you will make money for sure =)
    good luck!!

This is what a nich is. I'd say go for it.

what kind of files are they going to be uploading into this model display you want to build?

Also, what's that robot in your avatar? It looks familiar, like something I haven't seen in a long time.

I see this as a great idea because you are an artist and you know the problem artist faces.

As for html5 or GL coding, you probably can hire someone to code the website up for you and offers a freemium and a premium version to get money.

    Good luck !

Ever notice that people who spend money on WSO, memberships and courses, are always complaining about being broke and not making any money ?

They should have bought ASSETS instead.

I'm into 3D modeling myself. For some reason I can't seem to understand exactly what you're trying to do. But have you seen Sketchfab.com yet? They are the best example of using WebGL to present 3D models. Really cool stuff.

    LOL I can code too

Thanks for the kind words - yes I can sell them art courses & training - no problem there.

If you are into drawing or painting you will "get it"

The only obstacle is finding the very nice classical sculpture 3D models - perhaps museum scans are the way to go

    The hunt begins

How can I explain it to a non artist - you hold your sketch pad up and draw your drawing exact same size & proportions as on the screen - even though it may be a few inches away

This way you can make an exact copy by using grid lines. Its called size-sight. Something all natural artists reinvent.

See how its the same size - but the horse sculpture could be six feet away & it doesn't matter.
