What criteria to look for in shared hosting (besides cpanel) ?

What criteria should someone check out in a shared web hosting plan?

Cpanel (std, no proprietary - need to be able to easily backup & move site if needed)
php 5.3 (& later?)
....what else?

I'm looking to host multiple WP and php script sites.

I am not looking for host suggestions, but rather criteria.

Thanks!

I highly suggest dreamhost, there is no one I would recommend more. They are having a $3.95 new years special right now, they usually are about $9 a month, so its a pretty great deal. They can handle just about anything, and their customer support is top notch.

I'd go for a company with better support. Instant support via phone or live chat is a must for me.

      • I'm thinking:

Dedicated IP address is good, as is
        php 5.3 and later.
        SSL cert for multiple domains
        Multiple databases (MySQL)

        What else?

The truth is that a web host may not always be a static thing. The reason I say this is because you may pick just what you need at the best cost now, and realize that you need a host with a little more [something else] later on down the road.

I mean many a free web-hosts out there have the basics, good space, good bandwidth, SQL and other language capabilities. Perfect for starting out, or just getting some small sites and other web content online.

However one may one day come to realize that a particular subdomain that they are hosting one of their websites on if sucking bandwidth and it is causing problems overall for their entire lineup of websites they have on the host.

What I am getting at is try to find what you need, and forget about what you don't.

If you plan on using a lot of bandwidth for media and other things, then shoot for more of a media host with unlimited bandwidth.

If you want to have TONS of websites on subdomains so you can have all your websites on one server in one place for you to have to login to access, then find a webhost that offers that. Unlimited bandwidth would also be a bonus for a set up like that.

It comes down to your individual needs. You may look into custom hosting plans that you can change around as you go. I think those are usually a little more pricey though.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. Also I forgot to mention that WP alone sucks up about 35MB of disk space just to install IT. Forget plugins and everything else that goes into your website.
