What are the do's and don'ts of promoting to your list. I know not to promote too much and try to build relationships. Can you share any tips that have made promoting to your list a success.

Promote that which fits the relationship between you and the reader, and that which enhances that relationship. If the promotions are accurately targeted at the list )and not coming every day), the list won't mind. As soon as the promotions go off topic or too often, that's bad.

Firstly you should go through every product which you promote to your list

The key to making plenty of affiliate sales is having trust and trust does not happen overnight

You need to be sending quality stuff to your list, it doesn't have to be every day but when you email them with free stuff make sure it's good

I usually create new blog posts and send my list to those, this has worked great for me

Before you start thinking about making money from your list you need to honestly ask yourself if you think your list trusts you?

It's only when more members of your list trust your recommendations you start seeing good results from your promotions and any product for that matter that you sell via emails

I have about a 5 week window before my readers buy some where.

5 weeks. That's way too long to wait for a sale from your list. Unless you're sending 1 email every week.

I expect a sale on the 4th or 5th email message on average.

        1. Remember that, even if you have a list of 100k, you are still communicating to each list member one on one.

        2. Don't insult their intelligence.

        3. Be consistent. Don't sound like some kind of Harvard professor in one email, and a carnival barker in the next.

        4. Set expectations, then live up to them.

I agree with the others that state you should build the relationship with your list and provide useful relevant content and offers. If your list was built by offering a free report on traffic then talk with them about that and mold your offers around traffic topics. I, personally, don't open the emails of someone that sends offer after offer after offer and doesn't provide anything useful.

Also, be sure you know what the product is you are promoting. Maybe even buy it before you promote it - what?? There is so much junk and hype-up crap out there that your readers will respect you if you actually know what you're selling.

Apart from fellow warriors tips and suggestions, I would highly recommend you to read this blog post by Pat Flynn if you haven't already: 4 Types of AutoResponder Series and The One You Should Absolutely Avoid

One of the best blogpost on how you should structure your autoresponder-series. I personally find it very useful and would recommend that you read it.
